Recap: VIC 3 - KEL 4 OT [Game 2]


Tyson Baillie scored his second of the night in overtime to lift the Kelowna Rockets past the visiting Victoria Royals 4-3 Saturday and take a 2-0 playoff series lead.

The goal came just :58 seconds into the extra frame, just as the Rockets power play expired.

Brandon Magee scored his second of the night for the Royals to force overtime, after clawing back from a 3-0 deficit.

“I thought we came out and played hard,” said Head Coach Dave Lowry after his club fell 5-0 one night earlier,

“We played with a lot of emotion, we brought a lot of passion.  This is what you need at playoff time, and obviously we’re disappointed with end result.”

Victoria out shot Kelowna 41-27, but Jackson Whistle made 38 saves for the win.

Coleman Vollrath started for the Royals and made 11 saves on 14 shots before Justin Paulic came in the second to go the distance, stopping 11 of 12.

Austin Carroll had 3 assists for Victoria, while Joe Hicketts chipped in with a pair.  Alex Forsberg rounded out the scoring for the Royals, as his line with Carroll and Magee provided 6 points.

Leon Draisaitl also had 3 assists, while Tomas Soustal and Gage Quinney provided the other goals for the Rockets.  Draisaitl now has 5 points in the two games.

Both clubs scored a pair of power play goals, Victoria was 2 for 5, while Kelowna was 2 for 8.

The Rockets led 1-0 after 20, and led 3-0 in the middle frame before Magee scored late in the second period to snap Kelowna’s home playoff shut out streak that nearly lasted 11 periods.  It was the first goal the Rockets allowed on home ice during the post season.

Whistle set the franchise record for a playoff shutout streak on home ice going 218:02.

The Royals lost forward Greg Chase with a game misconduct near the end of the first, while Rockets defenseman Josh Morrissey did not return after the first period.

Victoria returns home for games 3 and 4 Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Recap: VIC 0 - KEL 5



Josh Morrissey had 3 assists for the Kelowna Rockets, while Jackson Whistle made 20 saves to blank the visiting Victoria Royals 5-0 Friday night, taking a 1-0 best of seven playoff series lead in round two.

Netminder was Coleman Vollrath valiant in making 39 saves in the defeat as the Rockets outshot the Royals 44-20 on the night.

“We felt that for the few shots that we had, it was evenly matched in terms of quality scoring chances.”  said Head Coach Dave Lowry,

“We had opportunities to shoot the puck in prime scoring positions and we were looking for the pass.  This time of year the goals that go in if they’re greasy - you give yourself a chance to win and we didn’t put ourselves in that position.”

Whistle earned his 3rd shut out of the playoffs, as Kelowna has not allowed a single goal against in all 3 post season home games.  They also averaged 38 shots for in the first 4 games against the Americans.

After a scoreless first, the Rockets Tyson Baillie opened the scoring and Cole Martin added a second with just :22 seconds left in the middle frame.

“Give up a goal in the last minute of the second period, we were within one shot of giving ourselves a chance in the third.  We made a mistake and ended up paying for it….”  said Lowry on how the game got out of reach.

Gage Quinney made it 3-0 in the third before a pair of power play goals by Rourke Chartier during a 5 on 3, and Tomas Soustal in the final minute rounded out the scoring.

Tyson Baillie was the first star with a goal and an assist including the winner, while Edmonton Oilers 1st round pick Leon Draisaitl chipped in with a pair of helpers, including hitting two posts.

Winnipeg Jets first round pick, Josh Morrissey returned to the line up after being out since Feb. 28.

Jack Walker almost opened the scoring after hitting iron, moments before Baillie converted on a feed from Draisaitl.

Victoria was 0 for 4 with the man advantage, while Kelowna was 2 for 5.

“It got better,” said Lowry of the power play which improved as the night went along,

“Still, at this time of year it’s your top players and we need better execution.  We have to get back to doing the basics, and working, and putting pucks off the net.”

Game two goes Saturday night in Kelowna before returning to Victoria for games Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Victoria Royals kick off round two of the post season on the road against the Kelowna Rockets Friday and Saturday night.

ROUND 1 SERIES

The Royals knocked off the Cougars in 5 games, while the Rockets swept the Americans to advance.  Both clubs needed overtime in the deciding game.

Victoria outscored Prince George 20-15, paced by the line of Tyler Soy, Greg Chase, and Jack Walker combining for 19 points.  The unit of Alex Forsberg, Brandon Magee and Austin Carroll put up a combined 17 points.

Chase and Magee both had hat tricks in round one.  Magee had 9 points in the 5 games, while Chase had 7.  Soy, Forsberg and Walker had 6 points each.

The Royals have 22 players on their team who have a combined 295 post-season games played. Meanwhile the Rockets have 346 WHL Playoff games of experience amongst 21 players on their squad.

On Victoria, forward Greg Chase leads the way with 33 games of post-season experience, while forward Tyrell Goulbourne has played the most playoff games on Kelowna with 37.

REGULAR SEASON

Kelowna finished the regular season 2nd in the WHL, with 112 points ranked 4th in the CHL Top 10.  Victoria came 2nd in the BC Division with 82 points.

The Rockets scored 61 more goals overall, while allowing 36 fewer than the Royals.

At home Kelowna only fell 8 times during regulation (26-8-2-0), and just 5 losses after 60 minutes on the road.  Victoria was 9 over .500 and home, and 1 under on the road.

The Royals were led by Austin Carroll in scoring with 77 points, with defenseman Joe Hicketts second with 64 points, and Tyler Soy third with 63.  Brandon Magee and Greg Chase rounded out the top 5.

The Rockets were carried by Nick Merkley’s 90 points with 70 assists, and Rourke Chartier’s 82 points including 48 goals.  Tyson Baillie notched 37 goals, and defenseman Madison Bowey chipped in with 48 helpers.  Bowey and defenseman Josh Morrissey both won Gold for Team Canada at the World Juniors, along side Joe Hicketts and Dave Lowry as an Assistant Coach.

Morrissey missed round one due to injury.

The Rockets and Royals each had five, 20 goal scorers.

Netminder Coleman Vollrath and Kelowna keeper Jackson Whistle both have made 114 career regular-season appearances with similar stats. Whistle boasts a .910 save percentage with a 2.61 goals-against average to Vollrath’s .909 and 2.88.

Both netminders where previously named CHL Goaltender of the Week.


HEAD TO HEAD

During their 8 regular season meetings, the Rockets took 5 of 8 games, however the Royals won 2 of the last 3, including their final meeting 6-3 in Kelowna on March 11th.

The Rockets outscored the Royals 32-26, led by Nick Merkley and Madison Bowey with 10 points in 8 games each.  Oilers first rounder Leon Draisaitl put up 9 points in 5 contests.

Brandon Magee led the charge for the Royals with 10 points in the 8 game season series.  Joe Hicketts had 9 points and Austin Carroll had 8.  Coleman Vollrath went 2-2, and Justin Paulic held a record of 1-2.

Rockets netminder Jackson Whistle sported a record of (1-1-1-0), while former Royal’s keeper, Michael Herringer was 4-1.

Victoria’s power play was 9/33 (27.27%) during their encounters, while Kelowna was 10/31 (32.25%).

Victoria’s Tyler Soy was ranked 78th by NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings on April 8th, while defenseman Chaz Reddekopp was 82nd, both jumping from 152nd and 199th respectively.

Kelowna’s Nick Merkely dropped from 13th to 23rd among North American Skaters, defenseman Joe Gatenby was rated 174th, as was rearguard Devante Stephens at 116th.

Soy (78), Reddekopp (82) Rated by NHL CSS Final Rankings

56 WHL PLAYERS MAKE NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING FINAL RANKINGS

CALGARY, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that 56 WHL players have been listed on NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings ahead of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Nine of the top-30 North American skaters are WHL players while three WHL netminders finished in the top-10 amongst North Americans. In total, the 56 WHL products that were identified by Central Scouting for the final rankings are more than any other league in the world.  

Ivan Provorov (Yaroslavl, Russia / Brandon Wheat Kings) jumped into the seventh spot in the final rankings while Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, BC / Seattle Thunderbirds) came in at 11th. Rounding out the top-30 were Jansen Harkins (#15 – North Vancouver, BC / Prince George Cougars), Jake DeBrusk (#19 – Edmonton, AB / Swift Current Broncos), Noah Juulsen (#22 – Abbotsford, BC / Everett Silvertips), Nick Merkley (#23 – Calgary, AB / Kelowna Rockets), Ryan Pilon (#24 - Duck Lake, SK / Brandon Wheat Kings), Brandon Carlo (#25 – Colorado Springs, CO / Tri-City Americans), and Paul Bittner (#26 – Crookston, MN / Portland Winterhawks).

Adin Hill (Calgary, AB / Portland Winterhawks) topped WHL goaltenders at fourth on the list while Nick McBride (Maple Ridge, BC / Prince Albert Raiders) came in at seventh. Nick Schneider (Leduc, AB / Medicine Hat Tigers) also hit the top-10 at ninth.  

Last year, 37 WHL players were selected in the 2014 NHL Draft including nine in the first round.
