6 Royals To NHL Rookie Camps (detailed)

ROYALS SEND SIX PLAYERS TO NHL ROOKIE CAMPS
Victoria’s Blomqvist, Brown, Carroll, Hicketts, Kanzig, and Magee all off to pursue NHL dreams.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals Hockey Club today announced that forwards Axel Blomqvist, Austin Carroll, and Brandon Magee as well as defenceman Travis Brown, Joe Hicketts, and Keegan Kanzig will all attend National Hockey League (NHL) rookie camps this week.

Axel Blomqvist
Blomqvist will skate for the Winnipeg Jets in the 2014 Young Stars Classic from September 12th – 15th as part of the club’s rookie camp. The annual Young Stars Classic is a round-robin tournament held in Penticton, BC that features prospects from the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames.

The 6-6, 212 lb winger participated in the Jets’ 2014 Development Camp earlier this summer after signing with the team as a free agent in September, 2013. Blomqvist who joined the Royals in November of 2013 has skated in 46 games for Victoria and has tallied 43 points (16g-27a) as well as 14 penalty minutes. The native of Osby, Sweden has collected one assist and six minutes in penalties in nine playoff games with the Royals.

Travis Brown
Brown will attend the Ottawa Senators’ rookie camp as an invitee. The camp will begin on September 12th at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata, Ontario, before heading to London, Ontario for a four-team round-robin tournament from Sept 13th-15th.

The Winnipeg, MB native was selected in the fifth round, 149th overall, by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2012 NHL Draft. Brown was acquired by the Royals in January of this year and registered 15 points (5g-10a) and 24 minutes in penalties in 28 games for Victoria. In nine post-season contests for the Royals, the 6-2, 193 lb defender recorded two goals and five assists.

Austin Carroll
Carroll will compete for the Calgary Flames in the Young Stars Classic at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, B.C. The camp will wrap on September 15th when Calgary takes on the Vancouver Canucks’ prospects.

The 6-3, 214 lb winger participated in the Flames’ 2014 Development Camp earlier this summer. Over the past three seasons with the Royals, Carroll has appeared in 199 regular season games and has posted 119 points (57g-62a) to go along with 346 penalty minutes. In 17 career playoff games with Victoria, the Scottsdale, AZ native has notched 12 points (8g-4a) and 24 minutes in penalties.

Joe Hicketts
Hicketts will attend the 2014 NHL Prospect Tournament in Traverse City, MI as an invitee for the Detroit Red Wings. The tournament is held from September 12th-16th and will feature top prospects from the Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres.

Earlier this summer, the native of Kamloops, B.C. took part in the Red Wings’ 2014 Development Camp. The 5-8, 186 lb defenceman has played in 104 games for Victoria, recording 48 points (12g-36a) and 57 minutes in penalties. Hicketts has collected three assists in 15 post-season contests with the Royals.

Keegan Kanzig
Kanzig will skate for the Calgary Flames in the 2014 Young Stars Classic from September 12th – 15th as part of the club’s rookie camp.

The Athabasca, AB native heads to Penticton after he was selected in the third round, 67th overall, by the Flames in the 2013 NHL Draft. The 6-6, 242 lb rearguard has spent three seasons with Victoria for a total of 196 games with three goals, 14 assists and 324 penalty minutes. Kanzig has also played in 17 post-season games where he has put up one goal and one assist to go with 18 minutes in penalties.

Brandon Magee
Magee will also compete for the Calgary Flames in the 2014 Young Stars Classic in Penticton, but as an invitee. Calgary’s first game of the tournament is today, September 12th at 4:00 p.m.
The 5-8, 185 lb forward has skated in 268 contests for the Royals/Bruins over the past five seasons and has put up 203 points (90g-113a) and 255 penalty minutes over that span. In 17 WHL post-season games, the Edmonton, AB native has registered 14 points (4g-10a) and 34 penalty minutes.
