Preview: Spokane at Victoria - Game 1 (Friday Mar.25.2016)


The top seeded Victoria Royals (50-16-3-3, 106pts) kick off the post season at home against the 8th seed Spokane Chiefs (33-30-5-4, 75pts) Friday and Saturday night.

The two clubs split the season series (2-2), but haven’t met since October.  Both clubs have won once in each others barns.  The Royals outscored the Chiefs by a margin of 9-6.

Victoria has 206 playoff games combined, while Spokane has 142.

The Royals set the franchise record in home wins with 26 and are riding a franchise best 13 game home win streak.  The Chiefs are 2 under on the road this year.

Victoria is ranked #4 in the CHL Top 10, and are riding a franchise best 13 game win streak into the playoffs.  Their 50 wins and 106 points are both franchise records.

Spokane has 4 wins in their past 10 games, and just had their 2 game win streak snapped with a 5-3 loss at Tri City.

Victoria has out shot their opposition in 19 straight games with a record of (17-1-1-0).  They gave up the fewest goals against, while scoring the 3rd most.  The Royals power play finished 6th overall, while their penalty killing was 2nd best.

The Chiefs power play was 20th overall, and penalty kill ranked 13th.  They scored the 14th most goals, while allowing the 8th most goals against.  Their goal differential was -22, the Royals +115.

Between the pipes, Spokane’s Tyson Verhelst has 23 wins in 55 games, but as of March 14th was listed out with an upper body injury (week to week).  Lasse Petersen has 12 wins in 25 games, and went 2-2 while starting the final 4 games of the regular season.  Matt Berlin was brought in from Drayton Valley of the AJHL to back him up.

Victoria has a dynamic duo between the pipes in overage netminder Coleman Vollrath and 17 year old rookie Griffen Outhouse.  Vollrath was tied for 3rd in wins with 32, and had the 3rd best goals against average at 2.40.  Outhouse had the leagues best gaa (1.82), and save % (0.937) while winning 18 games in 27 appearances – including 4 shutouts.
 
The Chiefs are led in scoring by Kailer Yamamoto with 71 points in 57 games, including 51 assists.  Dominic Zwerger is next with 55 points.  Jason Fram leads their defenseman in scoring with 46 points.

The Royals are led by Alex Forsberg’s 91 points, 9th most in the WHL, while his 60 helpers is 5th best overall.  Tyler Soy led the club in goals with 46, 3rd most in the league.  The line of Soy (85pts), Jack Walker (84pts) and Vladimir Bobylev (67pts) combined for 236 points, 32% of the teams total.

Bobylev’s +45 rating was the 7th highest in the WHL.

Soy was the Western Conference’s Most Sportsmanlike Player, and nominated for the Brad Hornung Trophy.

Matthew Phillips led all rookies in goals (37g) and scoring (76pts), and was named the Western Conference’s Rookie of the Year, and nominated for the WHL Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy.

Joe Hicketts led all Royal defenseman in scoring with 61 pts and 53 assists.  Defenseman Ryan Gagnon led the club in plus/minus +46, 6th best in the league. 

Hicketts, who represented Canada at the World Juniors in back to back years, was named the Western Conference Player of the Year, and Top Defensman of the year.

Hicketts and Soy were named to the Western Conference First and Second All Star teams respectively.

Victoria Head Coach Dave Lowry was named the Western Conference Coach of the Year, while Cameron Hope was named the Western Conference Executive of the Year.

The Royals swept the Chiefs two seasons ago in round one of the playoffs.  

Royals’ fans are encouraged to wear black and blue to all home games in support of the team’s playoff run.
