Preview: Edmonton at Victoria, Wed. Nov 6th

The Victoria Royals (10-8-0-1, 21pts) entertain the defending Eastern Conference Champions, Edmonton Oil Kings (10-7-0-1, 21pts) Wednesday night.

It’s the first of 2 meetings this season, as last year the Oil Kings took both games at Rexall by identical 5-2 scores.

Victoria is coming off a 3-1 victory over Red Deer Saturday earning the split after the Rebels took the Friday night contest 2-1.

Logan Nelson and Austin Carroll had a goal and assist each, while Steven Hodges had two helpers as the line combined for 6 points.  Patrik Polivka played in both games posting a 1.52 gaa and a .935 save %.

The Royals are 2nd in the BC Division, but 7th in the West with 21 points.

Most recently Edmonton shut out Vancouver 3-0 Tuesday night, Cody Corbett had a goal and an assist, while Tristan Jarry earned his 2nd shutout of the season with a 37 save performance.

The Oil Kings have a 4-1 record so far on an 8 game road trip.  They’ve won 7 of their last 10 (7-2-0-1) and 5 of their last 6, placing them 4th in the East and 3rd in the Central division.

Headlining the Edmonton offense is Curtis Lazar, the 17th overall pick of the Ottawa Senators in 2013, alongside Phoenix Coyotes’ 2012 first-rounder Henrik Samuelsson.  New York Islanders’ 2012 fourth overall pick Griffen Reinhart leads the way on the back end with 2nd round pick of the Penguins Tristan Jarry between the pipes.

The Oil Kings lose a lot of the firepower that has kept them at the top of the WHL standings over the last two seasons.  Gone are Michael St. Croix, Dylan Wruck, T.J. Foster, Stephane Legault and Trevor Cheek.

Edmonton also lost several of their top defencemen from last season with the departure of Keegan Lowe, Martin Gernat and David Musil.

The Royals will look for a second consecutive win to wrap up their 5 game homestand.

Following the Oil Kings, is a two game US road swing with stops in Seattle Friday and Portland Saturday.
