Recap SEA 1 - VIC 2 Overtime

Logan Nelson scored in overtime as the Victoria Royals (13-9-0-1, 27pts) beat the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 Friday night.

The Royals have now won 3 straight, including a 5-3 victory at Seattle (11-8-1-2, 25pts) last Friday, while the Thunderbirds are winless in 6 (0-5-1-0).

Victoria remains 6th in the West, gaining a single point on 7th place Seattle who are 2 back.

They meet again Saturday night in the back half of the two game set with the Royals leading the season series (2-0).

Netminder Coleman Vollrath picks up his 5th win of the year, and 3rd straight after kicking out 21 of 22 shots.  Danny Mumaugh earned second star with a 32 save effort in the overtime loss. 

Last Friday Victoria was outshot 46-20 at Seattle, this time they returned the favour with a 34-22 differential.

The T-birds struck first, with Dallas Stars prospect Branden Trook scoring early in the first, deflecting a Kevin Wolf point shot past Vollrath.  Brandon Magee tied the game in the second with a wrist shot for his 5th goal in 3 games.

After a scoreless third, Ben Walker set up Nelson from behind the net to roof the clincher, his team leading 10th goal of the year.

For Nelson it was his 5th game winner of the year, tied with Boston Lier of the Pats for 2nd in the WHL, only behind Mitch Holmberg of the Chiefs.

There was one fight, as Taylor Crunk and Branden Trook squared off at the end of the first period.

Neither club could score on the power play, Victoria 0 for 3, the T-birds 0 for 1.

The Royals are now 1 over .500 at home (7-6-0-1), and 2-0 in overtime.

Victoria was without defenseman Keegan Kanzig (upper, day to day) who’s missed 3 straight, Joe Hicketts (upper, indefinitely) and Jack Walker (illness).  Landon Welykholowa did not dress. 

Jack Palmer made his home debut and played on a line with Hodges and Magee as he did last weekend.
