2013-14 WHL ON SHAW BROADCAST SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

Calgary, AB. - The Western Hockey League and SHAW Communications today announced that SHAW will broadcast 32 games on the full cable network in Western Canada during the 2013-14 WHL Regular Season.  The WHL on SHAW will also provide extensive coverage of the 2014 WHL Playoffs, broadcasting a full series in each of the four rounds including the WHL Championship Series, as teams battle for the Ed Chynoweth Cup.  SHAW is entering its tenth season as the official regional cable broadcaster of the WHL and is proud to have broadcast the entire WHL Championship Series in High Definition for the past three seasons.

The 2013-14 WHL on SHAW broadcast schedule will highlight key rivals LIVE most  Friday nights on ‘The WHL on SHAW Friday Night Hockey’ across Western Canada on SHAW TV and Shaw Direct ‘Channel 299’.

The broadcast schedule begins on Thursday, September 19, with a special season opening game featuring the Regina Pats hosting their divisional rivals, the Swift Current Broncos.  The feature game will be broadcast LIVE on SHAW TV starting with a preview show and full coverage of the opening night festivities at 7:00pm CST. On the following Wednesday, September 25, the WHL on SHAW will feature the Seattle Thunderbirds visiting the Vancouver Giants where the first overall WHL Draft Pick from 2012, Mathew Barzal will make his WHL regular season debut as a member of the Thunderbirds.

Recap: VIC 3 - VAN 1

15 year old Dante Hannoun scored twice as the visiting Victoria Royals defeated the Vancouver Giants 3-1 in Ladner on Sunday.

“We got better as the game went on, and we got some timely goals.” - Head Coach Dave Lowry

Patrik Polivka made 36 saves, Brandon Magee had a pair of assists, and Logan Fisher had the other tally as Victoria scored a goal in each period.

“For the most part we maintained and played with great composure and for us moving forward we want to be we’re a very disciplined team, and we took steps towards that.”

It was the clubs second win in as many days against the Giants, after a 4-3 victory on home ice the night before.  The Royals wrap up their pre season play with 3 wins in a row, and an exhibition record of (3-1-0-1).

“We play a style that’s fairly demanding on the players but it can be an easy game if they
manage and play the puck a certain way - we were fortunate tonight we got some plays and goals off the rush just by doing things right.”

Victoria went 1 for 4 on the power play, shutting down all 5 Vancouver man advantages.  The Giants outshot the Royals 37-25, with Travis McEvoy the only goal for the G-Men in the middle frame.  Payton Lee made 5 saves in the first period for the Giants and Jared Rathjen made 17 saves for Vancouver the rest of the game.

Hannoun the Royals 11th overall bantam pick in 2013 signed with the club earlier in the week and was playing in just his second exhibition game.

“It just shows him that he’s going to be a good player at this level, and talking to him after there’s certain things we want him to work on and we’re going to pay close attention to.”  said Lowry about Hannoun, who’s just 5’6 146 lbs but scored 63 goals in 63 games for the North Shore Winter Club last season.

"He’s not the biggest guy stature wise but he goes to areas to score goals and he’s got a very good ability to finish.”

Magee who’s earned 4 points (1g 3a) over his last two games, was involved in a fight with Giants defenseman Tyler Morrison.

The Royals open up the regular season in Vancouver Friday September 20th at 7:30, with their home opener the following night against the same Giants.

Recap: VIC 4 - VAN 3

Jack Walker had 2 goals and an assist as the Victoria Royals (2-1-0-1) edged the visiting Vancouver Giants (2-2-1-0) 4-3 Saturday afternoon.  Brandon Magee and Joe Hicketts had a goal and an assist each, while Coleman Vollrath made 25 saves for the victory.  Victoria closes out their exhibition play Sunday afternoon against Vancouver in Ladner at 2pm.

Trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes, Hicketts and Walker gave the Royals their first lead before the Giants tied the game at 2 before the second was out.  Victoria jumped ahead again with a  pair of goals courtesay of Magee and Walker before Cain Franson made it close late.
Both clubs scored twice on the power play, Victoria going 2 for 8, and Vancouver 2 for 4.

Payton Lee and former Royal Jared Rathjen split the goaltending duties, Lee stopping all 10 he faced, while Rathjen allowed 4 goals on 19 shots.  The Royals outshot the Giants 29-28.

Jack Walker primarily played defense last year and was moved up to forward, a position he's played most of his life.

Victoria’s first round bantam pick in 2013, 11th overall 15 year old forward Dante Hannoun played his first game with the club, after signing earlier in the week.
