Recap: PG 3 - VIC 4 SOW

Steven Hodges notched the shoot out winner
The Victoria Royals took both games from the visiting Prince George Cougars after overcoming a 3-0 third period deficit on Saturday night enroute to a 4-3 shoot out win.

The Royals celebrate 4-3 shoot out victory over Cougars
Brandon Magee and Steven Hodges scored in the shootout, while Coleman Vollrath denied Caleb Belter and Dalton Siwak.  Ben Walker missed for Victoria.

The Royals also took the Friday night contest 5-1, and now have a 5-1 season series lead, winning back to back home games against the Cougars for the first time in team history (5-3).  They’ll meet twice more in Prince George February 1st and 2nd.

Chase Witala (2g 1a) scored the lone goal of the first, and after Colin Jacobs (1g 1a) put them up 2-0 in the second, Witala scored his second of the game to give Prince George a 3-0 lead heading into the third.  Victoria Head Coach Dave Lowry was asked what was said to his players after 40 minutes,

Truth be told, they took it upon themselves and I give our leadership lots of credit because we never went it and said anything – whatever they said, it worked.

Austin Carroll (1g 1a) scored :37 seconds into the third after a clean face off win from Steven Hodges, Jamie Crooks earned his 17th on the power play to cut the lead to 3-2 at the mid way point of the period before Brandon Magee (1g 1a) evened the score with under 3 minutes to go.

Coleman Vollrath (2-4-0-0) who hasn’t started since November 9th in Calgary, but has had some relief appearances since, stopped all 10 shots after replacing Patrik Polivka in the second with this team down 3-0,

We’re not taking anything for granted right now, that was a big comeback win, but at the same time if you look at the first couple of periods we didn’t play up to our standards and expectations and we have to come out better than that.

Polivka stopped 7 of 10, while Mac Engel got the nod for Prince George stopping 41 shots, and was beaten twice in the shoot out.  The Royals out shot the Cougars 44-20 overall.

Keegan Kanzig was involved in a heavy weight fight with Dallas Ehrhardt late in the 2nd, and Lowry eluded to it as a key moment for the club,

Kanzig vs Ehrhadt
“I thought Kanzig did a good job (in the fight) and as soon as we had a bit of emotion we seemed to generate some enthusiasm and were able to find a way to carry it over (into the 3rd).”

Victoria went 1 for 6 on the power play, while Prince George clicked twice in the second going 2 for 6.

Brandon Magee earned 5 points (1g 4a) in the two game set, while Jamie Crooks (2g 2a) had 4 points, Austin Carroll picked up 3 (1g 2a).  Ben Walker had 2 goals and a Gordie Howe Hatrick in the Friday night win.

Lowry commented on the game plan going in without their top 2 scores Alex Gogolev (day to day), and Logan Nelson (lower body) in the line up – a combined 67 points missing,

We wanted to play the same way we did last night, we didn’t have Gogolev to start the game and we lost Nelson early, and we were able to score 5 goals.  We didn’t really wanted to change anything, we wanted to play fast, we wanted to play physical and the unfortuante thing is, we were neither to start.   I give these guys credit they stayed with it and found a way to win.

Up next the Royals hit the road for a single game against the Rockets in Kelowna on Wednesday night.

Recap: PG 1 - VIC 5

Ben Walker scored twice, and earned a Gordie Hat Trick as the Victoria Royals defeated the visiting Prince George Cougars 5-1 Friday night, their first game back after the Christmas Break.

Sometimes these breaks are a good thing…refreshed everybody.” – Royals Assistant Coach Enio Sacilotto

Walker (2g 1a), along with Jamie Crooks (1g 2a), and Brandon Magee (3a) had 3 point nights and were named Stars 1 through 3 respectively.  Walker won a fight against Zach Pochiro in the first, and now has 12 goals on the year, and 29 points in 32 games.

Mitch Deacon is stopped by Brett Zarowny
The Royals led 2-1 after 20 minutes, and 3-1 after 40.  Taylor Crunk scored the eventual game winning goal with 1:02 left in the first period, and was excited about the club’s performance.

I felt we played a great team game through all the 3 periods, and I thought we did all the little things we needed to do…We got off to a good start, and I thought that was key for us tonight.

Patrik Polivka earned his 15th win with 19 saves.
Steven Hodges who was very effective in the face off circle, rounded out the scoring with his 9th of the year in the third.  The final two Victoria  goals came :37 apart in the final frame to put the game out of reach.

Royals forward Logan Nelson left the game in the first after falling akwardly along the boards after a hit and was seen later on crutches.

According to Sacilotto, “It’s a lower body injury…we’ll find out a little bit more tomorrow, he’s going back and see the doctors and find out exactly what the problem is.

Ben Walker (far left) had 2 goals, 1 assist and a fight.
Victoria was already without leading scorer Alex Gogolev (day to day), defensemen Joe Hicketts and Ryan Gagnon to the U-17 tournament in Quebec, and F Luke Harrison who missed his 7th in a row – but found a way to score 5 goals.

A good team is a sum of it’s parts.  If you want to be an elite team then it doesn’t matter who’s missing from the line up, the other guys have to to carry the load and find a way to get it done.” said Sacilotto.

Patrik Polivka earned his 15th victory with 19 saves, infront of his family who flew in to see him from the Czech Republic, their first visit to Victoria.  His counterpart, reigning CHL Goaltender of the Week, Brett Zarowny dropped his 8th decision allowing 5 goals on 34 Royal shots.  Victoria was especially dominant on the shot clock in the second period with a 14-3 advantage, which pleased Sacilotto,

I thought we had a great second period, probably one of our best of the season.  We broke it open in the third and very pleased with the effort from every single player on our team tonight.”

The Royals scored once on four power play opportunities, while the Cougars struck out on three chances.

The clubs will meet again on Saturday on the Island with Victoria taking a 4-1 season series lead, now with 4 consecutive wins against Prince George.  According to Sacilotto,

We’re going to let them (players) enjoy the victory…but tomorrow morning…it’s back to business and see if we can sweep this, and put Prince George behind us.  That was our goal going into the weekend – step 1 accomplished.”

Preview: Prince George vs Victoria

The Victoria Royals (17-14-0-2, 36 points) return from their Christmas Break to entertain the Prince George Cougars (12-18-1-3, 28 points) for a pair of games Friday and Saturday.

It’s their 5th meeting of 8 this season, with Victoria holding a 3-1 series lead after a pair of wins in Prince George by scores of 2-0 and 4-3 on Nov 30th and Dec 1st respectively.  They split a double header on the Island back in November.

The Royals are coming off a 3 game road trip (1-1-0-1) picking up a 6-2 win in Seattle, falling in a shoot out 3-2 in Red Deer, and dropping the final game 5-2 in Edmonton.  Victoria is 6th in the Conference, 7 points back of Tri City and 8 ahead of Prince George.

The Cougars played a 3 game set against the Giants before the break, falling 2-1 in Vancouver and then winning the final two at home by 6-0 and 2-1 scores.  Prince George is tied for 8th in the Conference with Everett, but have 3 games in hand.

The Royals will be without defensemen Joe Hicketts and Ryan Gagnon who are representing Team Pacific at the 2013 World U-17 Hockey Challenge from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4 in Victoriaville and Drummondville, Que.  Cougars forward Carson Bolduc will also be participating.  Prince George defenseman Rinalds Rosinskis is representing Latvia at the World Juniors.

Recap: VIC 2 - EDM 5

“If you want to beat the top teams like this, you basically have to play mistake free, and play for 60 minutes.” – Royals Assistant Coach Enio Sacilotto

Victoria wraps up a 3 game road trip with 3 of a possible 6 points (1-1-0-1).  They’re now on their Christmas Break until Prince George visits for a pair of games December 28 and 29th.

The Royals led 1-0 after 20 minutes, and 2-1 early in the second before 4 unanswered in the middle frame.  There was no scoring in the third.

“I think when they took that 3-2 lead it took the wind out of our sails.  If we would’ve continued at the pace we were playing at we would’ve been fine.  I’m a little bit disappointed in that, but that’s hockey.” Said Sacilotto.

Patrik Polivka saves a shot
TJ Foster led the way with a goal and an assist, while Tyler Stahl (4th) and Steven Hodges (8th) scored for Victoria.  Edmonton also got goals from Cody Corbett, Michael St. Croix, Keegan Lowe and Brandon Baddock.

It was the first of two meetings, and will meet again at Rexall Place on February 17th.

Oil Kings netminer Tristan Jarry earned his 9th win with 24 saves, while his counterpart Patrik Polivka suffered his 8th defeat after allowing 5 goals on 23 shots.  He was replaced by Coleman Vollrath at the 16:00 minute mark of the 2nd period, stopping all 6 shots directed his way.

Victoria went 0 for 4 on the power play, while Edmonton went 1 for 5.

The Oil Kings improve to 11 over .500 at home (14-3-1-2), while the Royals road record slips to (7-9-0-1).

Victoria started the road trip with a 6-2 win on Tuesday, then a 3-2 shoot out loss in Red Deer before the 5-2 loss in Edmonton.

Conner Bleackley scored the deciding shoot out goal as all three Rebel shooters were successful. The Royals went 2 for 3 with goals from Logan Nelson (4/4) and Steven Hodges, as Brandon Magee missed.

That’s the way our team has to play to be successful, we were physical, capatalized on a couple of opportunities.” – Royals Head Coach Dave Lowry

Royals assistant coach Enio Sacilotto on the importance of notching the second goal right after the bears were cleaned up. “That delay sometimes could your momentum, but we got the second one and it didn’t hurt our momentum at all we just kept on going and I thought It was good hockey game all the way around for us.”

Carroll didn’t realize at first that he had scored, “I just shot the puck and it went right up and in.  I didn’t notice (it was a goal) until everybody was cheering infront of me.

Lowry scored his team leading 16th with under 4 minutes to go in the third on the power play to make for an interesting finish, but Patrik Polivka stood tall as the Broncos pressed with their netminder pulled.
