Recap: EDM 1 - VIC 2

Austin Carroll scored the eventual game winner, while Justin Paulic made 34 saves, as the Victoria Royals (30-20-3-1, 64pts) edged the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings 2-1 Monday afternoon.

Jack Palmer tallied the other as the Royals held period leads of 1-0 and 2-1, holding off the Oil Kings in the third for their 4th consecutive victory.

Victoria takes the season series 2 games to 1, as all three games were decided by a goal.

The defending Memorial Cup Champions suffered a second straight setback, and fall to 3-7 in their past 10.

Paulic stopped all 17 in the first period, enroute to his 11th victory of the season.  His counterpart, rookie Patrick Dea allowed 2 goals on 22 shots in the loss.

The Royals led 1-0 after 20 minutes on Palmers’ 4th.  Oil Kings Mads Eller scored on the power play early in the second before Austin Carroll earned his 29th and 60th point of the season to put the home team back ahead.

Edmonton took a too many men penalty as they attempted to pull their goaltender for the extra attacker late in the third, snuffing an attempted come back.

Royals forward Taylor Crunk was assessed a 5 minute major for fighting and a game misconduct with 5 seconds left in the first period, in an altercation with Blake Orban.  Palmer was promoted to the top checking line with Logan Fisher and Regan Nagy.

Defenseman Alexey Sleptsov picked up his first point as a Royal assisting on Carroll’s goal.  Defenseman Joe Hicketts ran his assist streak to 6 games.  Brandon Magee played in his franchise best 300th game.

The Royals went 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Oil Kings went 1 for 4.

Victoria has allowed the fewest goals against in the league since the Christmas Break with 32, amassing a record of (13-3-1-0) in that span.  The Royals hit the 30 win plateau in their 54th game, remaining 2nd in the BC Division, and 4th in the Conference 4 points up on Seattle and 2 back of Portland.

Victoria kicks off a 3 game in 3 night road trip in Kelowna Friday night, with both clubs winning 8 of their last 10 games.  So far this season the Royals are 1-2 against the #2 ranked club in the CHL and must face them a total of 5 more times in their last 18 games.  Saturday night Victoria is in Kamloops, and Sunday at 5pm at Seattle.
