Signings: Atwal, Russell

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that the team has signed 16-year-old forwards Arjun Atwal and Zach Russell to Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreements.

Atwal and Russell were both listed to the Royals’ 50-man protected player list in 2015 and 2014 respectively. Each WHL team is allowed to protect 50 players which includes individuals who have either been signed, drafted or listed by their respective club.

A product of Edmonton, AB, Atwal spent last season with the South Side Athletic Club (SSAC) United Cycle Bulldogs of the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League (AMMHL). In 37 games for the Bulldogs, Atwal recorded 87 points (49g-38a) and led the league in scoring and goals.

Arjun is a smart and talented forward who has worked hard and earned a contract with our Club,” General Manager Cameron Hope said. “We are happy to welcome Arjun and his family to the Royals’ family.”

The 5-6, 167 lb centre helped his club go undefeated on their route to an AMMHL Provincial Championship with a tournament-high 19 points (6g-13a) in seven contests. Atwal also led the AMMHL playoffs in points with 22 (8g-14a) in five games as the Bulldogs captured the Sutter North Cup.

ZACH RUSSELL



The 6-0, 183 lb winger spent the 2014-15 campaign with the Northwest Calgary Athletic Association (NWCAA) Bruins of the AMMHL. Russell collected 45 goals and 28 assists for 73 points in 33 games for the Bruins.

“Zach is a power forward that plays with speed and size” Hope said. “We are pleased to welcome Zach and his family to the organization.”

   A native of Calgary, AB, Russell notched five goals and one assist in four AMMHL playoff contests for the Bruins as they reached the semi-finals of the Sutter South Cup.

Day 2 at Rookie Camp I caught up with 2014 2nd round pick forward Ryan Peckford and 2015 3rd rounder Netminder Dean McNabb who's brother is a defenseman for the LA Kings.

Main Camp begins Monday, and wraps up with the Intra-squad game Wednesday night.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that the club has signed their first round pick from the 2015 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft, centre Eric Florchuk, to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

The native of Fort Saskatchewan, AB was selected 13th overall at the draft in Calgary, AB last May. The WHL Bantam Draft is an annual event in which clubs select players who have graduated from bantam. For the 2015 draft, players born in 2000 were eligible.

“Eric is an offensively gifted player and a great skater,” General Manager Cameron Hope said. “We are excited about his future with our club, and happy to welcome Eric and his family to the organization.”

The 5-10, 140 lb centre spent the 2014-15 season with the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League (AMBHL). In 33 games played Florchuk collected 46 points (24g-22a) and 24 penalty minutes. In 14 contests in the 2015 AMBHL Playoffs, Florchuk notched 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points as the Rangers made it to the league championship. Florchuk was also named an all-star in this year’s Alberta Cup where he registered five points (4g-1a).

The Victoria Royals kicked off their rookie camp Friday at the SOFMC, with the 2014 and 2015 Bantam Draft selections, featuring last year's 1st round pick, 6'1 defenseman Scott Walford.




The thoughts of Royals Head Coach Dave Lowry on Walford, 2015 1st rounder Erick Florchuk and how many spots are available on the roster.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals today released details for their 2015 Intra-Squad Game at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday, September 2nd at 7:05 p.m.

Admission to the game will be by donation, with all proceeds going towards the Victoria Royals Education and Scholarship Fund. Seating will be general admission for the contest that will signal the completion of the Royals’ 2015 Training Camp.

In conjunction with broadcast partners The Zone @ 91.3 and 100.3 The Q! the Royals will be offering a $2.00 coupon for hot dogs, popcorn, and pop that are available for download and print from www.thezone.fm and www.theq.fm.

Fans attending the Royals’ 2015 Intra-Squad Game will have the opportunity to purchase the recently-released 5 Game Fan Pack. Draft Camp Profiles: Florchuk, Prowse

2015 DRAFT CAMP

The Royals’ Training Camp opened Wednesday, August 26th with a draft camp for players selected in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.  It was the first chance for fans to watch Victoria’s 2015 draft selections, including first round pick F Eric Florchuk, and second round selection D Mitchell Prowse.


Rookie camp begins on Friday, August 28th and concludes on Sunday, August 30th.  The rosters are comprised of players born in 1999 and 2000, skaters who have been drafted or listed by the Royals and free agent invites. 

Main camp will be made up of returning players from the club’s 2014-15 roster, free agent invitees born from 1995 – 1998 and selected players from this year’s draft and rookie camps. The players will be divided into three teams for on-ice sessions that begin on Monday, August 31st and run through Tuesday, September 1st.
