The Victoria Royals (20-9-1-1, 42pts) avenged a 4-1 loss in Vancouver
Friday with a 6-1 home win over the Giants (9-19-2-2, 22pts) Saturday night.
“I thought the whole team responded,” said Enio
Sacilotto, interim head coach for Victoria,
“Griffen Outhouse made some great stops, our defense
played a lot better than they did last night, and it was a great performance by
everybody.”
The Royals who held period leads of 1-0 and 3-1, buried the
Giants with a 3 goal third period.
“We were just moving our feet, getting pucks in deep, and
putting shots on net – those things were turning points for us tonight.” said
forward Ethan Price, who scored the Teddy Bear Toss goal midway through
the first period.
“Technically I didn’t see it go in…” said Price,
“Once I saw fans get up, scream and throw teddy bears on the
ice, I had to think of a celebration really quick, so I just threw my hands in the
air and celebrated.”
Price joins Zane Jones, Austin Carroll (twice), and Axel
Blomqvist as Royals who’ve provided the famed score.
Jack Walker and Matthew Phillips had 3 point nights, and Outhouse earned the victory between the pipes for Victoria
making 33 saves.
It was the second of four straight encounters between the clubs,
as they’ll meet again on the Island Sunday afternoon at 3pm, then Wednesday back at the Pacific
Coliseum.
Victoria now
leads the 10 game season series 2-1.
It was a chippy affair with two fights, and 108 penalty
minutes, 54 assessed to both sides. Keith
Anderson of the Royals dropped defenseman Josh Thrower, and 17 year old Ralph
Jarratt was involved in a spirited tilt with veteran tough guy Dakota
Odgers of the Giants.
“There was a lot of emotion in the game, which is good, for both sides,” commented Sacilotto,
“Tonight was a good rivalry game.”
Leading 1-0 after 20 minutes, Dante Hannoun converted on a
feed from Matthew Phillips to go up 2-0. Jack Walker 10th on the power play
gave the home side a 3-0 lead.
With less than :04 seconds remaining in the middle frame,
Giants Chase Lang struck on the power play to breathe some life into Vancouver
heading into the 3rd down 3-1.
Ryan Kubic played the first 40 minutes stopping 16 of 19,
but was replaced by newcomer Jake Morrissey to start the final 20.
Victoria put
the pedal to the metal in the final frame with 3 unanswered goals, Matthew
Phillips added his team leading 18th of the season, Tyler Soy
notched his 13th, which was followed by Walker’s
2nd of the night.
Morrissey allowed 3 goals on 13 shots.
Both clubs went 1 for 4 on the power play.
The line of Alex Forsberg (2a), Phillips (1g 2a), and Hannoun
(1g 1a) collected 7 points, and now have contributed 80 points over their last
16 games (30g 50a). Walker
(2g 1a), Soy (1g 1a) and Vladimir Bobylev (1a) combined for 6 points.
Phillips is now 3rd in rookie scoring with 33 points
in 31 games, including the most goals by a freshman with 18.
