Recap: Seattle 1 - Victoria 4 (Feb 6)

Jamie Crooks scored twice to lead the Victoria Royals (30-19-1-3, 64pts) to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds (19-31-4-1, 43pts) Wednesday night, sweeping the two game set by identical scores.

The Royals led 3-0 after 20 minutes and 4-1 after 40, while their power play scored twice to extend their franchise record home point streak to 12 games.

Victoria remains tied with Spokane for 5th in the West, and are just 1 point back of 4th place Tri City.  They’ll meet both clubs on the road this weekend.

Ben Walker had a 3 point night with a goal and two assists, while his brother Jack had a pair of helpers, Austin Carroll and goal and an assist.  Crooks had his 4th multi goal game of the year as he pulls into a tie for the teams goal scoring lead with Brandon Magee with 26 markers.

“...That was a goal our team needed…critical time to score a goal and that kind of took the wind out of their sails and for us gave us a little bit more energy.”

Patrik Polivka earned his 26th win of the season with 31 saves, while Brandon Glover played the first, allowing 3 goals on 11 shots, replaced by Danny Mumaugh at the start of the second allowing 1 goal on 19 shots.

Victoria sweeps the season series 4-0 against Seattle, while earning their 4th sweep in 8 back to back home sets this year.

The club earned it’s 30th win of the year, and is just 3 wins away from tying the franchise record for most victories in a season.

Victoria was without their leading scorer Alex Gogolev who suffered a skate cut the previous night.

“Alex will be re evaluated in a few days…Yes, It would be nice to get him towards the end of the road trip, if not, we we move forward.  He’s a huge part of our team but we’ve had a lot big pieces out for extended periods and guys have done a real good job of stepping up and accepting challenges.”

Now riding a 3 game win streak, the Royals head out onto the road for a 6 game in 10 night road swing beginning against Tri City Friday.

“For us the challenge will be that we have six tough buildings to go into and six really good teams.  This is what we’ve been talking about and now we’re going to need success.”

Recap: Seattle 1 - Victoria 4 (Feb 5)

Hodges and Walker celebrate a goal in the Royals 4-1 win over T-birds Tuesday
The Victoria Royals pull into tie for 5th in the West with Spokane after a 4-1 victory over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds in the first of back to back games, Tuesday night.

Patrik Polivka made 26 saves for 1st star honours and extends the franchise record home point streak to 11 games.

The Royals take a 3-0 season series lead and will look for the sweep Wednesday, with the pregame show on The Zone @ 91.3 fm at 6:40.

“We found a way to win a hockey game.  Let’s not take anything away from Seattle, they came in and played a real solid road game and we had to fight right to the end to win.” – Dave Lowry, Royals Head Coach

In the final frame, Victoria lost their leading scorer Alex Gogolev to an apparent skate cut to his lower leg.  Gogolev has scored a goal in each of his last 3 games, and leads the club with 65 points in 49 games.

The Royals held period leads of 2-0 and 3-1 on goals by Jamie Crooks (24th), Alex Gogolev (20th) and Steven Hodges (21st) before Joe Hicketts (2nd) added a short handed empty net goal late for the insurance.  Shea Theodore scored the lone tally for the Thunderbirds on the power play.

“We can’t play like that for a full game, it’s not doable.  We’ve got to be more disciplined and we’re going to come out tomorrow and be stronger and have to really limit our turnovers in the neutral zone and get pucks behind their (defense) and attack from there.” – Steven Hodges, Royals Forward

Victoria native Brandon Glover allowed 3 goals on 24 shots for his 22nd loss of the season, while Polivka earned his 25th win.

Preview: Seattle at Victoria (Feb 5)

The Victoria Royals (28-19-1-3, 60pts) entertain the Seattle Thunderbirds (19-29-4-1, 43pts) for a pair of games Tuesday and Wednesday night.

It’s the final two meetings of the season with the Royals taking both previous encounters on the road by identical 6-2 scores Jan. 12th, and Dec. 11th.

Victoria returns home looking for back to back wins after a 2-1 shoot out victory in Prince George Saturday, earning a split after falling 6-2 the night previous.  The victory snapped a winless in 3 stretch.

Seattle wrapped up a 4 game homestand with a 1-2-1-0 record dropping their last 2, most recently a 4-3 overtime loss versus Tri City Saturday and 5-3 to Portland Friday.  The lone victory, was a 6-1 score over Prince George.

The T-birds are 8th in the West, 17 points behind the Royals.  Seattle has 3 wins in their last 10.

Victoria is 6th in the Conference, just 2 points back of Spokane for 5th, and hold a game in hand on the Chiefs.

After the 2 meetings against the T-birds, the Royals head out for a big 6 game in 10 night road trip taking them through the US and Central divisions.

Recap: Victoria 2 - Prince George 1 (Shoot Out)

Patrik Polivka made 38 saves while Alex Gogolev scored once and added the winner in the shoot out to lead the Victoria Royals (28-19-1-3, 60pts) past the Prince George Cougars (16-30-2-5, 39pts) 2-1 on the road Saturday night.

“For us this was a must win, obviously we give up a goal late but we were able to find a way to win in a shoot out.” – Head Coach Dave Lowry

The Royals earn the split against the Cougars after falling in Prince George 6-2 one night earlier.

Lowry was pleased with the bounce back effort,

“It was a nice response of a game and I thought we did a lot of little things real well, good for the guys to stay with it and find a way to win.”

Victoria takes the 8 game season series 6 games to 2.

The Royals wrap up 3 in 3 nights on the road picking up 2 points after falling to the Rockets Thursday and Cougars Friday.  They return home for a pair against the Thunderbirds Tuesday and Wednesday before heading out on a 6 game road trip.

Victoria is now just 2 back of Spokane for 5th in the West, with a game in hand on the Chiefs.

After a scoreless first, Gogolev scored the lone goal of the middle frame converting a rebound off a Jordan Fransoo point shot.  Jack Walker was involved in his first fight against Jake Mykitiuk and the Royals rookie took the decision.

With just 1:34 left in the third, Dallas Ehrhardt fired a one timer past Polivka to tie the game at 1-1.

Overtime settled nothing and the shoot out went 4 deep before Gogolev scored the lone tally for the win.  Mac Engel stopped Steven Hodges, Brandon Magee and Jamie Crooks to take the shoot out loss.  Patrik Polivka earned his 24th win in stopping Zach Pochiro, Troy Bourke, Colin Jacobs and Caleb Belter.

“This was a tough building for Patrik (Polivka) they throw a lot of pucks, traffic and he had to make a lot of big saves…it’s no different than any other night our expectation is our goalies have to give us a chance to win and tonight we got that.”

Preview: Victoria at Prince George (Feb 2)

The Victoria Royals (27-19-1-3, 58pts) look for the split on the road against the Prince George Cougars (16-30-2-4, 38pts) Saturday night, in the second of back to back games.

Friday night the Cougars scored 3 times in a span of 3:06 in the middle frame to take a 5-1 lead, going on to win 6-2.  Chase Witala had a hat trick as his club scored twice short handed, one being on a penalty shot. 

For Victoria, Alex Gogolev and Logan Fisher scored, while Joe Hicketts picked up 2 assists in the loss.  Prince George got multiple point contributions from Dallas Ehrhardt (1g 2a) and Troy Bourke (2a).

It was the Royals first loss at the CN Centre since the club relocated to the Island.  They’ve now dropped back to back road games on consecutive nights after falling 6-1 in Kelowna Thursday.

Victoria is now chasing Spokane for 5th in the West, just 4 back with a game in hand on the Chiefs.  The Cougars are now 4 out of the 8th and final playoffs spot held by the Thunderbirds.

It’s the final meeting of the season as the Royals look to wrap up 3 in 3 on the road with a win before heading home for a pair against the Thunderbirds Tuesday and Wednesday.

Recap: Victoria 2 - Prince George 6 (Feb 1)

Chase Witala scored a hat trick to lead the Prince George Cougars to a 6-2 victory over the visiting Victoria Royals Friday night.

It was the Royals first loss at the CN Centre since the team relocated to the Island.  Victoria leads the 8 game season series 5-2, and will have a rematch Saturday night.

Witala struck once in the first and early in the second before Alex Gogolev (18th) scored a 4 on 4 goal to cut the lead in half. 

The Cougars then struck 3 times in a span of 3:06, the later two shorthanded.  First Tanner Lishchynsky on a shot from the point, then Colin Jacobs with short handed, penalty shot marker. Dallas Ehrhardt stepped out of the penalty box while as his club was killing a 5-3 and scored short handed to give Prince George a 5-1 lead.  The Royals would reply on the power play as Logan Fisher would net his 3rd of the year tipping a Jack Walker point shot past Engel.

In the third Witala finished off the scoring with his 3rd of the night to snap the Cougars 2 game slide and move his club to within 4 points of the 8th place Thunderbirds.

There was a second short handed penalty shot in the game, awarded to Jarrett Fontaine in the third period who was stopped by Patrik Polivka.

Coleman Vollrath was relieved after stopping 20 of 24, while Patrik Polivka stopped 8 of 10.  Mac Engel made 28 saves for the victory.

The Royals power play went 1 for 7 while stopping all 5 Cougar man advantages.

Victoria’s Jamie Crooks had his 4 game point streak snapped (2g, 2a).  Joe Hicketts picked up 2 assists in the loss, while Prince George got multiple point contributions from Dallas Ehrhardt (1g 2a) and Troy Bourke (2a).

The Americans overtook the Chiefs for 4th in the West with a win over the Silvertips Friday.  Victoria is 4 points back of now 5th place Spokane and have a game in hand on the Chiefs.

It’s now back to back road losses for the Royals on consecutive nights, after falling 6-1 against the Rockets Thursday.

Preview: Victoria at Prince George (Feb 1st)

The Victoria Royals will look to get back in the win column Friday night, as they kick off back to back road games in Prince George against the Cougars.

It’s the 7th meeting of the season, with the Royals (5-1) winning their last 5 encounters after dropping their first at home.  Victoria has not lost in Prince George George since the club relocated to the Island.

The 6th place Royals are in the middle of 3 in 3 on the road, and fell 6-1 to the Rockets Thursday. Kelowna’s power play struck twice, Jordon Cooke made 27 saves for his league leading 28th win, while the Rockets had two point efforts from six different players.  Jamie Crooks scored the lone goal for the Royals who saw their 8 game unbeaten in regulation streak come to and end.

Victoria is 3 points back of Tri City for 5th in the West, and hold 2 games in hand on the Americans.

The 9th place Cougars return home from a 2 game US road swing dropping both games, 5-2 at Tri City Wednesday and 6-1 at Seattle Tuesday.  Prince George won their last home game, a 4-0 shut out over Everett, earning them a split against the Silvertips last weekend.  The Cougars have just 1 win in their last 6, and are 1-3 since Mark Holick took over as head coach.

Victoria’s stretch of 9 straight games with a power play goal was halted Thursday in Kelowna, as did the point streaks of Alex Gogolev (9 games), Brandon Magee (9 games), Steven Hodges (8 games) and Brett Cote (5 games).  Netminder Patrik Polivka’s franchise record 7 consecutive wins came to an end.

The Royals wrap up the month of January with a (8-4-1-1) record.
