Preview: Victoria at Kelowna [Game 1 - Round 2] Fri.Apr.10

The Victoria Royals kick off round two of the post season on the road against the Kelowna Rockets Friday and Saturday night.

ROUND 1 SERIES

The Royals knocked off the Cougars in 5 games, while the Rockets swept the Americans to advance.  Both clubs needed overtime in the deciding game.

Victoria outscored Prince George 20-15, paced by the line of Tyler Soy, Greg Chase, and Jack Walker combining for 19 points.  The unit of Alex Forsberg, Brandon Magee and Austin Carroll put up a combined 17 points.

Chase and Magee both had hat tricks in round one.  Magee had 9 points in the 5 games, while Chase had 7.  Soy, Forsberg and Walker had 6 points each.

The Royals have 22 players on their team who have a combined 295 post-season games played. Meanwhile the Rockets have 346 WHL Playoff games of experience amongst 21 players on their squad.

On Victoria, forward Greg Chase leads the way with 33 games of post-season experience, while forward Tyrell Goulbourne has played the most playoff games on Kelowna with 37.

REGULAR SEASON

Kelowna finished the regular season 2nd in the WHL, with 112 points ranked 4th in the CHL Top 10.  Victoria came 2nd in the BC Division with 82 points.

The Rockets scored 61 more goals overall, while allowing 36 fewer than the Royals.

At home Kelowna only fell 8 times during regulation (26-8-2-0), and just 5 losses after 60 minutes on the road.  Victoria was 9 over .500 and home, and 1 under on the road.

The Royals were led by Austin Carroll in scoring with 77 points, with defenseman Joe Hicketts second with 64 points, and Tyler Soy third with 63.  Brandon Magee and Greg Chase rounded out the top 5.

The Rockets were carried by Nick Merkley’s 90 points with 70 assists, and Rourke Chartier’s 82 points including 48 goals.  Tyson Baillie notched 37 goals, and defenseman Madison Bowey chipped in with 48 helpers.  Bowey and defenseman Josh Morrissey both won Gold for Team Canada at the World Juniors, along side Joe Hicketts and Dave Lowry as an Assistant Coach.

Morrissey missed round one due to injury.

The Rockets and Royals each had five, 20 goal scorers.

Netminder Coleman Vollrath and Kelowna keeper Jackson Whistle both have made 114 career regular-season appearances with similar stats. Whistle boasts a .910 save percentage with a 2.61 goals-against average to Vollrath’s .909 and 2.88.

Both netminders where previously named CHL Goaltender of the Week.


HEAD TO HEAD

During their 8 regular season meetings, the Rockets took 5 of 8 games, however the Royals won 2 of the last 3, including their final meeting 6-3 in Kelowna on March 11th.

The Rockets outscored the Royals 32-26, led by Nick Merkley and Madison Bowey with 10 points in 8 games each.  Oilers first rounder Leon Draisaitl put up 9 points in 5 contests.

Brandon Magee led the charge for the Royals with 10 points in the 8 game season series.  Joe Hicketts had 9 points and Austin Carroll had 8.  Coleman Vollrath went 2-2, and Justin Paulic held a record of 1-2.

Rockets netminder Jackson Whistle sported a record of (1-1-1-0), while former Royal’s keeper, Michael Herringer was 4-1.

Victoria’s power play was 9/33 (27.27%) during their encounters, while Kelowna was 10/31 (32.25%).

Victoria’s Tyler Soy was ranked 78th by NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings on April 8th, while defenseman Chaz Reddekopp was 82nd, both jumping from 152nd and 199th respectively.

Kelowna’s Nick Merkely dropped from 13th to 23rd among North American Skaters, defenseman Joe Gatenby was rated 174th, as was rearguard Devante Stephens at 116th.
