Preview: Regina at Victoria

The Regina Pats (9-12-1-1, 20pts) pay their first visit to the Island in 18 years to face the Victoria Royals (11-10, 22pts) Saturday night.

The Pats won their only meeting last year 7-3 on January 13th in Regina.

The Royals kicked off a 6 game homestand with a 5-0 blanking of the visiting Everett Silvertips Friday night.  Jamie Crooks had 2 goals and an assist to lead the offense, while netminder Patrik Polivka made 20 saves for the first shut out in club history.

The Pats clawed back twice to tie, but eventually fell 4-3 in a shoot out against the Giants in Vancouver Friday night, kicking off 6 consecutive on the road.  With 4 wins in their past 10, Regina sit 10th in the East with 20 points, but just 10 points out of first.

The Pats are led in scoring by F Lane Sheidl’s 27 points, F Morgan Klimchuk leads the team in goals with 12.      Regina has added Duncan product and overage defenseman Alex Theriau to the line up and played his first game of the season in Vancouver Friday.  He spent last season with Medicine Hat.

Alex Gogolev leads the Royals in assists (15) and scoring (24pts).  Gogolev, Brandon Magee and Jamie Crooks are tied for the team lead in goals with (9).

Victoria has now won back to back games, and with 22 points are 6th in the conference, 4 back of the Rockets.  The Royals are now (7-2) at the Save On Foods Memorial Center.

Victoria will play host to Saskatoon Tuesday, then a pair against Prince George next Friday and Saturday, before wrapping up the homestand against Moose Jaw.

Recap: EVT 0 - VIC 5

Jamie Crooks scored twice and added an assist to lead the Victoria Royals (11-10 22pts) to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips (7-14-0-2, 16pts) Friday night.

Patrik Polivka earned the club’s first shut out in team history with a 20 save performance, his 8th win of the season.  Austin Lotz turned aside 23 of 27 shots, and Daniel Cotton in the final frame stopped 8 of 9.

It was the first of 4 meetings of the season, and the first victory for the club in team history against the Silvertips.  They won’t meet again until January 11th in Everett. 

Victoria now has back to back wins and improves to 11-10 on the season, good for 6th in the conference, 4 points back of the Rockets.  The Silvertips remain in 9th, with 16 points.

The Royals held period leads of 1-0 and 3-0 after getting goals from Alex Gogolev (9th), Jamie Crooks (8th, 9th) and Ben Walker (7th) on the power play.  They would add a pair in the third with Brandon Fushimi’s 2nd of the season, and Crooks’ second of the night.   Brandon Magee had a pair of assists.

Everett’s leading scorer, defenseman Ryan Murray left the game in the second period and did not return.  The Royals were without F Steven Hodges, F Tim Traber (upper), and D Jesse Zgraggen (lower).

Victoria went 1 for 5 on the power play, scoring on a two man advantage, while shutting down all 3 Everett man advantages.

There were two main fights, with the Royals taking the decision in both.  Keegan Kanzig in the first period against Lucas Grayson, and Ryan Gagnon who’s played forward for the last two games, in the third against Dawson Leedahl.

The Royals will play the second of a six game homestand Saturday night against the Pats, falling last year in Regina by a 7-3 score.  Saskatoon visits on Tuesday.

Victoria improves to 7-2 at the Save On Foods Memorial Center, and improve to 6-3 when scoring the first goal of the game.

Preview: Victoria vs Everett

The Victoria Royals (10-10, 20 pts) kick off a 6 game homestand against the visiting Everett Silvertips (7-13-0-2, 16 pts) in their first meeting of the season Friday night.

The Royals look for their first win in team history against the Silvertips who took all 4 games last year.

Only 4 points separate the clubs, as Victoria is 3rd in the BC Divison and 6th in Conference, Everett 5th in the U.S. and 9th in the West.

Both clubs are coming off wins, the Royals a 5-3 victory in Medicine Hat last Saturday, snapping a 6 game slide while wrapping up 7 consecutive on the road.  Logan Nelson had the hat trick while netminder Patrik Polivka won his 7th game with a 29 save performance.

The Silvertips snapped a 7 game winless stretch with a 3-0 victory in Tri City last Friday, now 3 wins in their past 10.

Everett is led in scoring by 2nd overall pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, defenseman Ryan Murray, with 17 points in 22 games.  Forward Joshua Winquist is on a 3 game goal streak (4g).

Victoria, BC – The Victoria Royals announced on Monday that tickets to the Thursday, November 15^th SUBWAY® Super Series game at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre had officially sold-out. Thursday will mark the sixth and final game of the SUBWAY® Super Series as Team WHL takes on Team Russia. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.

The SUBWAY® Super Series features regional teams of CHL All-Stars competing against the Russian National Junior Team in a six-game event serving as an integral part of the identification process for Team Canada prior to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.  The OHL hosts the middle leg of the six-game series with the first two games hosted by the QMJHL, and the final two games played in the WHL.  Last season the CHL prevailed with their eighth series win in nine years of this event earning a 10-8 victory in points which included three regulation wins, two losses, and one defeat by shootout.  Team Canada later captured bronze at the 2012 World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton, AB.

Team WHL will face Team Russia in games five and six of the series played tonight in Vancouver, BC, and tomorrow in Victoria, BC.  The first two games of the series were hosted by the QMJHL with the OHL having hosted games three and four. Each team has won two games in regulation time through the first four games.

The Victoria Royals return home on Friday, November 16^th following the SUBWAY® Super Series game on Thursday. After a seven-game road trip, the Royals will begin a six-game home stand with a pair of games this Friday and Saturday. The Everett Silvertips visit Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Friday for Winter Driving Awareness Night while the Regina Pats make their only trip to Vancouver Island the following day as Saturday night will also mark Marty’s Birthday! Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. for both Royals’ games.

TEAM WHL CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED FOR 2012 SUBWAY® SUPER SERIES

CALGARY, AB – The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Western Hockey League, the Vancouver Giants and Victoria Royals Hockey Clubs today announced the players that will serve as Captains and Assistant Captains for Team WHL who will compete against the Russia National Junior Team in the 2012 SUBWAY® Super Series.  Team WHL will face Team Russia in games five and six of the series played on Wednesday, November 14 in Vancouver, BC, and on Thursday, November 15 in Victoria, BC.  The first two games of the series were hosted by the QMJHL with the OHL hosting games three and four.

Everett Silvertips’ defenceman Ryan Murray has been named Team WHL captain for game five of the SUBWAY® Super Series in Vancouver, BC.  The 19-year-old from White City, SK, is playing his fourth year with the Silvertips and was recently selected 2^nd overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2012 NHL Draft.  Murray is representing Team WHL for the third straight season.

Swift Current Broncos forward Adam Lowry has been named Team WHL captain for game six of the SUBWAY® Super Series in Victoria, BC.  The 19-year-old from Calgary, AB, is playing his fourth year with the Broncos and was a 3^rd round selection by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2011 NHL Draft.  Lowry is presenting Team WHL for the second straight season.

Griffin Reinhart (Edmonton Oil Kings) selected 4^th overall by the New York Islanders in the 2012 NHL Draft, Morgan Rielly (Moose Jaw Warriors) selected 5^th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2012 NHL Draft and Mathew Dumba (Red Deer Rebels) selected 7^th overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2012 NHL Draft have all been named assistant captains for Team WHL for both games five and six, on Wednesday, November 14 in Vancouver, BC, and on Thursday, November 15 in Victoria, BC.

TEAM WHL ROSTER UPDATE

The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Western Hockey League, the Vancouver Giants and Victoria Royals Hockey Clubs today announced that due to injury the Edmonton Oil Kings’ Mitch Moroz and the Regina Pats’ Trent Ouellette will be unable to participate in the 2012 SUBWAY® Super Series.  Moroz was originally scheduled to play both games five and six for Team WHL, while Ouellette was slated for game five only.

To fill the vacancies in the Team WHL rosters, Graham Black (Swift Current Broncos) and Sam Fioretti (Moose Jaw Warriors), who were originally scheduled to play game six in Victoria, will now also play game five in Vancouver.  The Spokane Chiefs Mitch Holmberg who was originally scheduled to play game five in Vancouver, will now also play game six in Victoria.
