Victoria, BC – Victoria
Royals National Bank Financial Intra-Squad Game occurred on Wednesday night at
the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre with the players being split in to Team Black
and Team White. The contest marked the end of training camp and featured 39 of
46 players still in contention to crack the 2012-13 Victoria Royals roster.
Michael Herringer got the start in net for Team White while Team Black gave the
nod to Evan Smith.
Team White got off to a quick start when Mitch Deacon
capitalized on Taro Hirose’s rebound just six seconds into the first frame.
Deacon picked the puck up off the left post before he beat Smith over the
shoulder to open the scoring. Team White struck again at 10:24 when Logan
Nelson found the back of the net. Steven Hodges sprung out of the right corner
with the puck and fed Nelson in the high slot. Deacon then added his second of
the night on the powerplay at 17:33 of the first period after he knocked Jordan
Fransoo’s point shot out of the air and banged it home. Team White took a 3-0
lead into the first intermission.
Hirose added a powerplay goal to extend Team White’s
lead to four at 1:20 of the middle frame. Deacon centered the puck from below
the goal line to Hirose who converted on the play. At the halfway mark of the
second frame, Jared Rathjen took over in net for Team White while Coleman
Vollrath was sent between the pipes for Team Black. Kade Pilton then opened the
scoring for Team Black at 10:26 after he one-timed Tyler Soy’s pass from the
right point. Team White responded a minute later when Clay Tait added a marker.
Dakota Conroy broke in on the right wing and fired a shot off of Vollrath’s
left pad before Tait buried the rebound. Team Black answered back and made it
5-2 on a goal from Brandon Fushimi at the 13:54 mark. Fushimi capitalized on a
two-on-one with Austin Carroll after he redirected Carroll’s centering pass
from the left wing. After two periods of play Team White held a 5-2 lead.
The final frame remained scoreless as both teams
played a tight defensive game. Rathjen and Vollrath each turned away nine shots
during the frame. Team White 5 Team Black 2.
