Spokane opened the season on the road with a 6-2 victory in Tri City. Mitch Holmberg had a 4 point night, including the hatrick, as the Chiefs outshot the Americans 37-24.
Last season Spokane took out Tri City in the first round of the playoffs in 5 games before falling 4 straight to Portland in the second round.
The Chiefs lost a large portion offense due to graduating players Brenden Kichton (85pts), Dylan Walchuk, and Blake Gal. However, overagers Mitch Holmberg and Mike Aviani combined for 69 goals and 148 points last year, and 6 points alone in their season opener.
The Royals are without Steven Hodges (lower, 4-6 weeks) and Chaz Reddekopp (lower, 3-5 weeks). Defenseman Keegan Kanzig is still away at Calgary Flames main camp, a 3rd round selection this year.
