Preview: Vancouver at Victoria (March 8)

The 6th place Victoria Royals (32-27-2-5, 71pts) return home and look to snap a winless in 11 slide against the 10th place Vancouver Giants (19-46-2-0, 40pts) Friday, kicking off a home and home set.

It’s the 9th meeting of the season, the Royals winning their last 3 encounters and hold a 6-2 series advantage.  Most recently winning a pair of home games by 6-4 and 4-1 scores on January 25th and 26th.  Brandon Magee scored 6 goals in those two games.

Victoria fell 4-3 shoot out loss in Kelowna Wednesday as the Rockets tied the game up in the final minute before taking it in a 6 round shoot out.  The line of Austin Carroll and the Walker brothers had 5 points, while Jamie Crooks scored his team leading 32nd. 

Victoria had 9 scratches, dressing 9 forwards and 7 defenseman.  Along with 6 injuries, forward Logan Nelson was ill and 2 players were serving suspensions, along with the Head Coach.

Keegan Kanzig received 2 games for a ‘one man fight’ while Tim Traber got 6 games for ‘leaving the bench during a stoppage and initiating a one man fight.’  Dave Lowry was serving a single game suspension for ‘conduct of the club’.  The Royals were fined $1500 for ‘actions of the club’ in the game at Kamloops.

Vancouver wrapped up 3 in 3 nights with a 1-0 overtime win against Everett on Sunday.  16yr old netminder Payton Lee made 13 saves for his first career shut out.  The Giants won 5-4 in overtime Friday against Lethbridge, and fell in Kamloops Saturday.  Over the 3 games Vancouver only allowed 59 shots against, averaging just under 20 per game.  They’ve on won 4 of their last 5 games.

The Royals are winless in 11 (0-8-1-2) tying the franchise record held by the Chilliwack Bruins in ‘06-07. The club has dropped their last 5 at home, and without Alex Gogolev in the line up have a record of (3-8-1-2) over their last 14 games.

The Royals are playing their 3rd of 5 games in 6 nights, part of a gruelling 6 in 8 stretch.

Victoria has 6 games left, and after the home and home against Vancouver Friday and Saturday, they’ll entertain Portland Sunday and Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season with a  home and home with Everett.
