Preview: Victoria at Kamloops (March 5)

The Victoria Royals (32-26-2-4, 70 points) look to snap a winless in 9 slide, in a potential playoff preview when they visit the Kamloops Blazers (44-18-2-3, 93 pts) Tuesday.

With 8 games remaining in the regular season the 6th place Royals are 10 back of the 5th place Chiefs, and 11 back of the Americans, while the 3rd place Blazers are 3 back of the Rockets.

Victoria has a 4-3 record against Kamloops, winning their last 3 in a row all within 5 nights in January.  The Royals first won at home 6-4, then 3-2 in a shoot out, and followed it up with a 5-4 win on the road.

The contest kicks off a gruelling 5 game in 6 night set, part of 6 in 8. 

Victoria is coming off a 3-2 home loss to Spokane Saturday, and 4-3 overtime defeat to the Chiefs Friday wrapping up a 5 game homestand with a (0-4-1-0) record.

Kamloops is riding a 3 game win streak after shutting out Kelowna 3-0 Sunday, JC Lipon scored three times and netminder Cole Cheveldave stopped 25 shots for his 5th shut out.  The Blazers went 3-0 in a 3 game in 3 night weekend.  After a 4-1 win in Prince George Friday, they returned home the following night to beat Vancouver 4-2.   Cheveldave allowed just 3 goals against over the 3 victories.

The Blazers are 19 over .500 at home (25-6-1-1), own the 6th best power play while scoring the 6th most goals for on average per game.  They are the 4th stingiest team goal wise, while allowing the fewest shots against on average per game.

Kamloops boasts 4 players in the top 15 in scoring lead by Colin Smith (40g 60a, 100pts), JC Lipon (85pts) is 7th, Tim Bozon (80pts) 11th and Brendan Ranford (77pts) 15th.

F Logan Nelson has 7 points over his last 3 games (4g, 3a).  Recently playing with his fellow Minnesota born teammates Ben and Jack Walker who each had a goal and an assist Saturday.   

Without leading scorer Alex Gogolev, Victoria has just 3 wins in his 12 game absence (3-7-1-1).  Gogolev has 12 points in the 7 meetings versus the Blazers.

Saturday the Royals were also without Logan Fisher, Taylor Crunk, Trent Lofthouse and Luke Harrison.  Captain Tyler Stahl did not finish the contest.

With one more win, the team can tie the franchise record for most wins in a season, held by the Chilliwack Bruins (33-31-4-4, 74pts) in ’10-11.

The Royals visit the Rockets Wednesday, return to Victoria for a home and home with Vancouver Friday and Saturday, followed by a 5 pm home date against Portland Sunday and Tuesday.  They wrap up the regular season the following weekend with a home and home against Everett.
