Preview: Victoria at Prince George, Friday Nov.7th

The Victoria Royals (9-8-2-0, 20 pts) visit the Prince George Cougars (10-8, 20pts) for a pair of games Friday and Saturday.

It’s their first meeting of the season, as last year the Royals won 7 of 8 games.  Victoria was 3-1 in Prince George and outscored the Cougars 29-13 in total.  They’ve taken the last 7 meetings straight.

Victoria is in a 4 way tie for 3rd in the West along side Prince George, Kamloops and Tri City, all with 20 points.

The Royals are winless in two games after a 5-1 loss to the #2 team in the CHL, the Rockets in Kelowna Wednesday.  Brandon Magee scored the lone goal for Victoria as Jackson Whistle made 27 saves for Kelowna while the Rockets built period leads of 3-0 and 5-0, and were 2 for 5 on the power play. There was over 120 minutes in penalties, most coming late in the third.

Prince George is on a 3 game win streak after a sweep of Kamloops last weekend by scores of 3-2 in a shoot out and 4-1 one night earlier.  They kicked off their win streak with a 3-2 road victory in Calgary.  The Cougars had previously lost 4 in a row.

Prince George is led in scoring by Jansen Harkins, an ‘A’ rated skater by NHL Central Scouting for the upcoming draft.  He’s 11th in league scoring with 21pts in 18 games including 17 assists.  His father is P.G. GM, Todd Harkins.

Chase Witala is 2nd in scoring but will begin serving a 2 game suspension.

The Cougars are first in penalty minutes on average in the league, while the Royals are 2nd.  Both have 23 majors.

Victoria has the 5th best power play percentage in the league, scoring in each of their last 8 games (10/24, 41.67% in that span).  Prince George’s penalty killing is ranked 22nd in the league.

Both clubs average 3 goals a game for.

Austin Carroll leads the Royals in scoring with 23 points and a team high 11 goals, good for 3rd most in the league.

Brandon Magee is on a 7 game point streak with 12 points (4g 8a),  Joe Hicketts is on a 4 game streak with 6 points (1g 5a).  Hicketts is 2nd in defenseman scoring with 21 points, including a team high 16 assists.  He’ll wear the ‘A’ for game 2 of the Subway Super Series in Brandon, Tuesday November 11th.

On home ice Prince George is 3 over .500 with a 6-4 record.  Victoria is 4-6 on the road.
