Preview: Victoria at Vancouver, Fri.March.13.2015

The Victoria Royals (36-27-3-1, 76pts) visit the Vancouver Giants (26-38-1-2, 55pts) Friday night to wrap up a 4 game BC Division road trip.

It’s the first of 3 games in 3 days against the Giants, with the Royals entertaining Vancouver Saturday night at 7, and Sunday at 1 pm.

Victoria has a 3-4 record in the season series, dropping their last two meetings by 6-3 and 4-0 scores back on Dec. 12th and 13th respectively.  The Royals beat the Giants at the Coliseum 7-5 on November 15th.

Victoria is looking for their 3rd consecutive win after a 4-3 shoot out victory in Prince George Saturday, and a 6-3 win in Kelowna Wednesday.

Coleman Vollrath made 44 saves for first star honours at Prospera Place, while Tyler Soy had the hat trick.  The Royals were 2 for 2 on the power play, while stopping all 3 Rockets man advantages.

Victoria has locked up 2nd place in the BC Division and home ice in the first round. They’ll play their first two playoff home dates on March 27th, and 28th at the SOFMC.

Vancouver has lost 7 in a row, and with 55 points sit 4 points back of Tri City and Kamloops for the final Wild Card spot in the West with 5 games remaining.

During the 7 losses, they’ve been outscored 32-9 and shut out 3 times.

The Giants recently fells 4-3 to the Chiefs Tuesday at the Pacific Coliseum. Vancouver got goals from Thomas Foster, Jackson Houck and former Royal Zane Jones.

Vancouver has just 2 wins in their past 10 (2-8), Victoria is 4-6 over that span.

The Giants are 7 games over .500 at home, while the Royals are 1 game under .500 on the road.

Oilers draft pick Jackson Houck leads Vancouver in scoring with 50 points.

Victoria is led by Calgary drafted Austin Carroll’s 74 points including 36 goals which is one shy of the Royals record of 37 in a season scored by Jamie Crooks.

Joe Hicketts leads all WHL defenseman in points with 61, including 50 assists - the most ever in a season in Royals team history.

Tyler Soy, ranked 152nd by NHL CSS is 3rd in team scoring with 60 points.  He was also listed at 64th by TSN’s Craig’s List.
