Preview: Royals Visit Giants Friday, Begin Home & Home

The Victoria Royals (43-16-3-3, 92pts) look to sweep their 4 game road trip when they visit the Vancouver Giants (23-35-5-3, 54pts) Friday night at 7:30.

“There’s not too many surprises with them, we know how they play, they work hard and if we don’t come out ready to play – they’ll take it to us.” said Royals leading scorer Alex Forsberg.

Victoria kicked off the trip, with a pair of 6-2 wins in Calgary and Red Deer, then beat Edmonton Monday afternoon 6-1.

“We’ve been working hard, getting timely goals and good goaltending as well,” said Logan Fisher who had a hat trick during Victoria’s last visit in Vancouver.

“It was good in Alberta, just looking to finish off the trip strong here in Vancouver.”

The Royals are riding a 6 game win streak and sit atop of the WHL standings 1 point ahead of the Rockets.

“It’s huge, home ice advantage in the playoffs, you want to work hard towards that - it’s everyone’s goal.” continued Fisher.

Victoria was again ranked 6th in the CHL Top 10, for a second week in a row.

Netminder Coleman Vollrath has started the last 5 games, while rookie netminder Griffen Outhouse was named the WHL Goaltender of the Month for February.

Vancouver is coming off a pair of losses in Prince George by 2-1 and 5-4 shoot out loss.

“They’re a dangerous and unpredictable team,” said Royals forward Jared Dmytriw, “They’re a fast team and play physical, we’re going to have to match their tempo….”

The Giants are winless in 5, last in the West, and have missed the post season for a second straight year.

“They’re a pretty good home team…capable of giving us a good battle.” said assistant coach Enio Sacilotto.

Victoria leads the season series 5 games to 3, and will meet each other again on the Island Saturday night.
