Preview: Victoria at Kelowna Wed. March 16th 7pm

The Victoria Royals (47-16-3-3, 100pts) can win their franchise first WHL regular season championship with a win on the road Wednesday night against the Kelowna Rockets (46-19-4-0, 96pts) at 7pm.

It would be the first Scotty Munro Trophy in the 10-season history of the Chilliwack / Victoria franchise and the first for the city since the 1980-81 Victoria Cougars 121pts. The city also won the WHL regular-season crown with the 1974-75 Cougars 99pts.

The Royals have won 10 in a row, and lead the Rockets by 4 points, each with 3 games remaining.  They’ve won their last 5 on the road, and are 12 over .500 off the Island.

Victoria has won 4 of 7 (4-2-1-0) meetings this year, including a pair in Kelowna, where the Rockets have dominated, only losing 5 times in regulation.  The Royals won their last encounter on the road 4-1 Jan. 30th.

Kelowna has dropped 2 of their last 3 games, and have just 5 wins in their past 10.  The Rockets wrapped up 3 in 3 last weekend with a 6-4 loss against the Americans in Tri City.  They beat Spokane 6-1 on the road Saturday, and started off the weekend with 4-3 home loss to Kamloops.

Victoria just swept the visiting Prince George Cougars by 4-3 and 6-2 scores over the weekend, and now have points in 11 straight games.  Their record over their last 26 games since the return of their World Junior participants is (23-2-2-0).  One of the overtime losses was to Kelowna in Victoria 2-1 on Jan. 16th.

The Royals are the stingiest team in the WHL, while scoring the 3rd most goals for on average per game.  Victoria’s penalty kill has the best efficiency percentage in the league.

Kelowna owns the 3rd best power play, while scoring the 4th most goals for on average per game.  The Rockets have allowed the 6th fewest goals against on average per game, and are riding Michael Herringer in net since losing Jackson Whistle Dec. 30th.  Herringer has started 27 of 31 down the stretch with a record of 17-8-2-0, a 2.99 gaa and .903 save %.
Head to Head Goaltending

The Royals netminders are 20 year old Coleman Vollrath and rookie Griffen Outhouse who are both in the top 3 in goals against average in the league.  Vollrath has started the last two games and now has appeared in 50 contests, winning 31.

Victoria is led in scoring by Alex Forsberg (88pts), while Tyler Soy leads them in goals with 41.  Jack Walker is 2nd in scoring with 77 pts.  Matthew Phillips leads all rookies in goals (36), and points with 72.

Kelowna is led by Tyson Baillie’s 92 points, including a team high 41 goals, and assists 51.

Both clubs have 3 games remaining heading into the contest.  The Royals wrap up with a home and home with Everett Friday & Saturday, while the Rockets do the same with the Giants.
