The Vancouver Giants came from behind to defeat the the visiting Victoria Royals 5-3 Sunday night.

The Royals who were playing 3 games in 3 days, were leading 3-2 heading into the third but were outshot 11-4 in the final frame.

“You can’t fault the effort, I thought our guys competed hard…” said Head Coach Dave Lowry,

We did run out of gas, but we’re not going to use that as an excuse, we’re going to use that as another learning tool.

They gave up a pair of goals 1:16 apart in the third, and one more into an empty net.

“When you play 3 in 3 you have to be an intelligent team. When you go into the third period with the lead,  you have to make sure you’re pushing the pace and not receiving it.” Said Lowry

Coleman Vollrath kicked out 25 of 29 in the defeat, while Payton Lee allowed 3 goals on 27 shots, 15 of which were in the first period.

Vancouver is now 3-0 on the season, after defeating Portland Friday and Victoria 3-1 last Saturday, while the Royals slide to 1-4.  The Giants take a 2-0 lead in the 10 game season series.

Six Giants had two point games, while their power play went 1 for 5, the Royals were 2 for 8 in a physical affair.

Taylor Crunk earned the decision in a rematch against Jack McClelland.  Chaz Reddekopp was very physical, throwing many body checks and earning an assist.

The Royals were without defenseman Ryan Gagnon and Brandon Magee, both due to suspension along with Axel Blomqvist (inj) and Brandon Fushimi.

Preview: Kamloops at Victoria, Friday Sept 26th

This Friday night is the home opener for the Victoria Royals (0-2) as they entertain the Kamloops Blazers (1-1) for a pair of back to back games.

Pregame show on The Zone @ 91.3 fm at 6:40 both nights or online at www.thezone.fm

The Royals will be looking for their first win of the season, and revenge, after dropping a 6-3 to decision to the Blazers last Friday, followed up with a 3-1 loss to the Giants.

Kamloops is 1-1 after falling 6-1 in Kelowna last Saturday.

It’s the beginning of 3 games in 3 nights for Victoria, beginning with the pair at home to Kamloops and wrapping up on the road in Vancouver Sunday at 5 pm.

Last season season the Royals won 7 of 8 games against the Blazers.

Last Friday, in Kamloops, the Blazers jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and never looked back as Josh Connolly and Cole Ully had a goal and two assits each.  Matt Revel notched a pair of goals and rookie Jake Kryski had a goal and an assist.

Jack Palmer scored a pair for Victoria, while Travis Brown connected on the power play.  Coleman Vollrath started, but split the duties with Evan Smith.  20 year old netminder Bolton Pouliout earned the win for the Blazers.

Victoria welcomes back forward Austin Carroll from the Flames bringing a team leading 34 goals last season, 19yr forward Axel Blomqvist, from the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets Main Camp and defenseman Joe Hicketts, who signed a 3 year entry level contract with the Detroit Red Wings earlier this week after going undrafted.

Brandon Magee was also returned from the Calgary Flames.  Magee however won't be available yet, as he's serving a 12 game suspension stemming from the playoff series versus Portland.

Only 6’6 250 lb defenseman Keegan Kanzig is still away at NHL camp with the Flames.

The Royals assigned 18 year old forward Braden Oleksyn to Junior ‘A’.

17 year old Victoria forward Tyler Soy and defenseman Chaz Reddekopp made the NHL Central Scouting 'Ones to Watch' list, with a 'C' Rating indicating a 4th-6th round candidate in the upcoming 2015 entry draft.

Blazers defenseman Ryan Rehill was returned Wednesday from New Jersey’s main camp.  Cole Ully attended Dallas Stars camp along with Colin Shirley.  Forward Matt Revel was returned from the Canucks after a free agent try out.

Kamloops is still without 19 year forward Chase Souto, out indefinitely with an upper body injury.  Souto had 31 points in 47 games last season.

The Blazers acquired 20-year-old forward Mike Winther from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for a 4th round pick in 2015 and a 6th round pick in 2017.  A former 1st round Bantam pick has 70 goals and 142 career points in 231 games with Prince Albert and Calgary.

Winther was selected by the Dallas Stars in the second round of the 2012 NHL Draft. He did not sign an NHL contract, so is now a free agent.

Kamloops also announced this week that they hired Mike Needham as the team’s new Assistant Coach.  Needham has spent the past three seasons as the Head Coach of the Okanagan Hockey Academy Bantam Prep team. His playing career included three seasons with the Kamloops Blazers from 1987-1990. He played 6 seasons of pro hockey which included 86 NHL games. Needham also won the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992.

Friday night Victoria looks to get their first win of the season and exact revenge in their home opener against Kamloops.

Blomqvist Back, Hicketts Signs

The Victoria Royals roster got a boost this week as three players were returned from NHL Main Camps.

Royals 19 year old forward Axel Blomqvist was returned from the NHL Winnipeg Jets to Victoria.

Defenseman Joe Hicketts signed a 3 year entry level contract with the NHL Detroit Red Wings after attending camp as a free agent.

20 year old forward Brandon Magee was returned by Calgary but faces a 12 game suspension.

Only forward Austin Carroll (team leading 34 goals last season) and 6’6 250 lb defenseman Keegan Kanzig are still away at NHL camps, both with the Flames.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals would like to congratulate defenceman Joe Hicketts who has agreed to a three-year entry level contract as a free agent with the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Detroit Red Wings.

The Kamloops, BC product has spent the past two seasons with the Royals. Hicketts ranks as the seventh-leading scorer for defenceman in franchise history with 48 points (12g-36a) in 104 games.
Hicketts was selected 12th overall in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft as the Royals’ first ever draft choice.

The 5-8, 186 lb defender won a bronze medal with Team Canada at the World Under-18 Hockey Championships in Finland this past April. Hicketts also won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2013 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament where he was named an alternate captain.

Magee & Hicketts: Back From NHL Camps

A pair of familiar faces were back on Royals ice Tuesday after returning from NHL camps, Joe Hicketts from the Wings, and Brandon Magee from the Flames.  Magee however won't be available yet, as he's serving a 12 game suspension stemming from the playoff series versus Portland.

I caught up with defenseman Joe Hicketts after returning from the NHL Detroit Red Wings Main Camp as a free agent.

NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING ISSUES 2015 ONES TO WATCH
Sep 23, 2014 - 11:17 MDT
NHL Central Scouting issues its preliminary Ones to Watch list for the 2015 NHL Draft, with 39 Western Hockey League skaters and three WHL goaltenders making the list.

NHL Central Scouting identifies players with a rating system that includes four ratings.  The ‘A’ rating indicates a 1st Round candidate, a ‘B’ rating indicates a 2nd/3rd Round candidate, and a ‘C’ rating indicates a 4th/5th/6th Round candidate. An ‘LV’ rating indicates Limited Viewing of injured players who have not had sufficient viewings to be categorized.

Five WHL players were assigned an ‘A’ rating, including Mathew Barzal of the Seattle Thunderbirds, Paul Bittner of the Portland Winterhawks, Brandon Carlo of the Tri-City Americans, Jansen Harkins of the Prince George Cougars and 2013-14 WHL Rookie of the Year Nick Merkley of the Kelowna Rockets.

In addition, 13 WHL skaters were assigned ‘B’ ratings while 21 WHL skaters were given ‘C’ ratings.

Three WHL goaltenders appear on the list, including Taz Burman of the Red Deer Rebels, Nick McBride of the Prince Albert Raiders and Jordan Papirny of the Brandon Wheat Kings. All three WHL goaltenders were assigned ‘C’ ratings.
