Hockey League today announced that Victoria Royals’ defenceman Travis Brown has
been named Denny’s WHL Player of the week.
Brown, a
20-year-old from Winnipeg, MB recorded five points (2g-3a) in the Royals’ two
games last week to go along with a plus-6 rating on his way to the honour. The
6’2, 198 lb defender becomes the third player (Joe Hicketts, 2014-15 and Alex
Gogolev, 2012-2013) in Victoria Royals team history to receive the Denny’s WHL
Player of the Week award.
In his last six games games played, Brown has registered three goals and eight assist for 11 points. Brown is tied for first in league scoring for defencemen with Royals’ teammate Joe Hicketts with 38 points (15g-23a) in 41 games played.
Victoria
acquired Brown in January 2014 from the Moose Jaw Warriors for the rights to
forward Noah Gregor (1998) and a pair of third round WHL Bantam Draft Picks.
The Royals
return to action on Wednesday to take on the seventh ranked team in the
Canadian Hockey League the Medicine Hat Tigers. Victoria will close out their
seven game homestand with a two-game series against BC Division rivals the
Prince George Cougars on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.

CALGARY, AB - The Western Hockey League announced today that Victoria Royals
defenseman Travis Brown is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for
the week ending January 4th, 2015.
Brown notched five points (1g-4a), while posting a plus-six rating in two games over the past week leading the Royals to two straight victories in that span.
On Friday, January 2nd, Brown had a four-point outing (1g-3a) and finished the game with a plus-four rating while claiming first star honours in an 8-1 triumph over the visiting Spokane Chiefs. On Saturday, January 3rd, Brown potted his 15th goal of the season and extended his point streak to six games as Victoria defeated the Chiefs 4-2.
Brown, a 20-year-old Winnipeg, MB product, currently sits tied with teammate Joe Hicketts for the scoring lead amongst WHL rearguards with 38 points and his 15 goals is also good for first in the league for defensemen. The 6’2”, 198 lb defenseman is in his fifth WHL campaign and second as a member of the Victoria Royals. Originally a fourth-round pick, 76th overall, of the Moose Jaw Warriors in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, Brown has amassed 162 points (45g-117a) in 251 career regular season contests. Brown was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round, 149th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft.
The WHL has also nominated Adin Hill of the Portland Winterhawks for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Hill, an 18-year-old from Calgary, AB, registered a 0.67 goals-against average and a .978 save percentage, including two shutouts, in three starts during the past week. On Wednesday, December 31st, Hill stopped 26 shots as the Winterhawks fell to the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1. On Saturday, January 3rd, Hill turned aside all 35 shots he faced and was named the game’s first star as Portland blanked the visiting Tri-City Americans 3-0. Hill finished the week by making 29 saves to record his second straight shutout while also earning first star honours in a 4-0 victory over the visiting Thunderbirds on Sunday. He currently leads all goalies this season with a .934 save percentage and his 2.44 goals-against average is good for third place. Now in his second WHL campaign with the Portland Winterhawks, Hill has posted a 14-5 record with two shutouts in 22 career regular season appearances.
