Victoria won their previous meeting last Friday night 5-3 at Seattle. Tyler Soy had 3 points, Brandon Magee and Brandon Fushimi 2 goals each, while Coleman Vollrath made 43 saves in the win.
The Royals won 3-2 in overtime the following night on the road against the Winterhawks with Magee scoring twice again including the winner. Vollrath made another 41 saves, as the club swept their 2 game US road swing.
Vollrath improves to 4-1-0-1 on the season while sporting the leagues top save percentage (0.939) and 3rd best goals against average (2.21).
Victoria improves to 6-3 on the road, while handing Portland just their 3rd home loss of the season. The Royals leapt past the Thunderbirds for 6th in the West by a single point, however carry a game in hand.
It was the franchise’s first win in Portland since the move to the Island and the team had not won there since November 15, 2009, a streak of 7 games.
Victoia is now 9-0 when scoring first, and when leading after 40 minutes.
Seattle comes in looking to snap a 5 game losing skid after a 10-2 defeat at Portland Tuesday. They’ve given up 30 goals in that span, with no less than 5 against per game.
The Thunderbirds are led in scoring by Anaheim first round pick defenseman Shea Theodore (11g 13a) who had his first hat trick against the Royals last weekend. Next is rookie Matthew Barzal (3g 19a), their first overall selection in the 2012 bantam draft.
Seattle will see the return of defenseman Evan Wardley after completing his 4 game suspension. The Thunderbirds released 20 year old forward Erik Benoit this week, leaving one overager spot open.
Victoria is without 3 defenseman. Keegan Kanzig and Jordan Fransoo are day to day, and Joe Hicketts out indefinitely. Wearing the ‘C’ in Fransoo’s absence was centerman Logan Fisher in both weekend games.
Hicketts was named to the NHL Central Scouting Services ‘Players to Watch’ list Thursday, in the ‘B’ category. Seattle’s Roberts Lipsbergs made the ‘C’ category, along with Oil Kings and Victoria native defenseman Dysin Mayo.
