Preview: Victoria at Portland, Sat. Nov 9th

The Victoria Royals visit the defending WHL champions Portland Winterhawks Saturday looking to sweep their 2 game US road swing.

Pregame show on The Zone at 6:45.

The Winterhaws sit atop the WHL standings and are ranked 3rd in the CHL.  With 29 points and a record of (14-4-0-1), Portland still is just 1 point ahead of 3 clubs in the West, Spokane, Everett and Kelowna.

The Winterhawks had their 11 game win streak snapped Wednesday by the visiting Americans 3-2.

Portland boasts a line up which includes 8 NHL draft picks.  6 skaters are producing at a point per game or better.  They’ve scored the most goals for on average per game (4.84), while taking the 2nd most shots.  Oliver Bjorkstand and Nicolas Petan are tied for 2nd in league scoring with 37 points in 19 games.

The Winterhawks haven’t given up more than 3 goals in a game in their last 9.  During their 11 game win streak,  Todd Vrooman the play-by-play voice of the Portland Winterhawks tweeted: "The @pdxwinterhawks have trailed for a grand total of 7:15 during their entire 11-game winning streak."

Gone on the back end from last year are stalwarts Troy Rutkowski and Tyler Wotherspoon, and Predators first round pick Seth Jones.  Up front Ty Rattie and Taylor Peters have graduated.

The Royals won 5-3 on the road against the Thunderbirds Friday night.  Tyler Soy had 3 points and Coleman Vollrath made 43 saves, while Brandon Magee and Brandon Fushimi scored a pair of goals each, overshadowing a hat trick from Ducks 1st round pick Shea Theodore.

Royals led 1-0 after 20 minutes while being outshot 17-4, and jumped to a 3-0 lead early in the middle from a mere 7 shots on goal, chasing Justin Myles from the net.  Danny Mumaugh stopped 11 of 12 the rest of the way.

Soy had a goal and two assists on Fushimi’s markers as they combined for 5 points.

Victoria was out shot 46-20 overall, with Vollrath earning his 3rd victory in 5 games this season.

Wearing the ‘C’ in Fransoo’s absence was centerman Logan Fisher.  Newcomer Jack Palmer played his first game as a Royal, on a line with Magee and Hodges.

Victoria is without 3 defenseman.  Keegan Kanzig and Jordan Fransoo are day to day, and Joe Hicketts out indefinitely.  Jack Walker did not play (ill).

The Royals now have a 5-3 road record, while the Winterhawks are 7-2 at home.

It’s the first meeting of the season between Victoria and Portland, as last year the Winterhawks won all 4 games.
