Preview: Victoria at Seattle, Friday Nov 8th

The Victoria Royals (10-9-0-1, 21pts) visit the Seattle Thunderbirds (11-5-0-2, 24pts) in the first of 4 meetings this season this Friday night.

Last season, Victoria won all four games against Seattle.

Victoria is looking to get back in the win column after being shut out by Edmonton 5-0 Wednesday, as Henrik Samuelsson had goal and two assists and Tristan Jarry earned the shut out as the Oil Kings doubled the Royals in shots 42-21.  Polivka started in net, and split the duties with Coleman Vollrath.

The Royals wrapped up 5 straight at home with 3 points (1-3-0-1), after winning all 5 on their previous homestand.   

Victoria is without 4 players, 3 of them defenseman.  Keegan Kanzig (day to day) did not return to action following a 2nd period fight with Brandon Baddock.  Captain Jordan Fransoo (day to day), Joe Hicketts (Upper, indefinite) and forward Jack Walker (illness, day to day).

The Thunderbirds enter the contest with 5 days in between games, with a 6 over .500 record and just one home regulation loss this season in 8 games.  The Royals are one game over .400 on the road (4-3).

Seattle however has dropped their last two games, a 5-0 loss at Everett last Saturday and 5-2 defeat versus Portland the night before.

The T-birds are 4th in the US division, and 5th in the West after earning 5 wins in their past 10.  The Royals are 2nd in the BC division, but 7th in the West.

Seattle has take the 4th most penalty minutes on average per game, while Victoria comes in at 11th.

Leading the Thunderbirds in scoring is rookie Matthew Barzal with 20 points in 18 games, including 3 goals.  He’s 3rd among rookie scoring behind imports Nikita Scherbak of the Blades and Julius Honka of the Broncos.

Anaheim first round pick 26th overall defenseman Shea Theodore (signed 3 year deal) is second in scoring with 18 points in 16 games, good for 8th among league reargaurds.  He’s followed in team scoring by Latvian Roberts Lipsbergs, and Russian Alex Delnov (4th rd FLA’12).

The T-Birds acquired left wing Jaimen Yakubowski and right wing Sam McKechnie from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for left wing Riley Sheen, left wing Carter Folk and a third round selection in the 2015 Bantam Draft on October 24.

Left wing Ryan Gropp made his T-Birds debut on Friday, October 25, against the Tri-City Americans at the Toyota Center. He scored the first goal of the game, on his first shift.

The Royals acquired a local product in 18 year old forward Jake Palmer from Brandon Wednesday and could make his debut against the T-birds. 

Going the other way, a pair of 5th round selections in the 2014 bantam draft.  Palmer was taken by the Wheat Kings in the 8th round of the 2010 bantam draft. This season he had 1 goal and 2 assists in 15 games with Brandon, 12 points in 60 games the year prior.  He was the VIJHL rookie of the year collecting 53 points (24g-29a) in 37 games for the Saanich Braves in 2011-12. 

Palmer, who is from Victoria, is the son of former Victoria Cougars F Brad Palmer, who went on to split 168 NHL games between the Minnesota North Stars and Boston Bruins.

The Royals kick off a two game US road swing against the Thunderbirds and Winterhawks in back to back nights beginning Friday.
