Recap: VIC 5 - SEA 3

Tyler Soy had 3 points and Coleman Vollrath made 43 saves as the visiting Victoria Royals (11-9-0-1, 23pts) beat the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-3 Friday night.

Hats for Theodore's 3 goals
Brandon Magee and Brandon Fushimi scored a pair of goals each, overshadowing a hat trick from Ducks 1st round pick Shea Theodore.

Royals led 1-0 after 20 minutes while being outshot 17-4, and jumped to a 3-0 lead early in the middle from a mere 7 shots on goal, chasing Justin Myles from the net.  Danny Mumaugh stopped 11 of 12 the rest of the way.

Soy had a goal and two assists on Fushimi’s markers as they combined for 5 points.  Soy at 16 years old, and Fushimi at 17 provided important secondary scoring.

Royals celebrate the 5-3 victory
Magee’s first goal came early in the 2nd, on breakaway, after going 15 games without a goal.  He added his second of the game into an empty net adding insurance.

Victoria was out shot 46-20 overall, with Vollrath earning his 3rd victory in 5 games this season.  The club blocked numerous shots, and even got some help from Vollrath’s posts in the third.

The T-birds (11-6-0-2, 24pts) suffered their 3rd loss in a row, and just their 2nd regulation defeat on home ice (6-2-0-1).  The Royals now have a 5-3 road record.

Tyler Soy 3rd star, Vollrath 2nd
Neither team scored on the power play, the Royals were 0 for 2, T-birds 0 for 4.

There were two fights as Isaac Schacher had his first scrap against heavy weight 6’6 223 lb Mitch Elliot in the second.  Austin Carroll earned the decision against Jerret Smith in the third, after Carroll laid a big hit on Theodore.

Victoria played with 5 defenseman as 3 are out with injuries.  Keegan Kanzig and Jordan Fransoo are day to day, and Joe Hicketts out indefinitely.  Jack Walker did not play (ill).

Wearing the ‘C’ in Fransoo’s absence was centerman Logan Fisher.  Newcomer Jack Palmer played his first game as a Royal, on a line with Magee and Hodges.

It was the first meeting of the season, while last year the Royals swept the four game season series.

Logan Nelson on the attack...
Victoria wraps up their two game US road trip in Portland Saturday night against the 3rd ranked team in the CHL, before returning home for a pair next weekend against Seattle.

The Winterhawks had their 11 game win streak snapped Wednesday with a 3-2 loss at home to the Americans, and sit atop of the WHL standings.
