Victoria edged 3-1 by Spokane for first loss of the 2015-16 season.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals fell 3-1 to the Spokane Chiefs as the visiting team scored a late marker in the second period on Tuesday night for the homeside’s first loss of the season.

The Chiefs’ Dominic Zwerger tallied the game-winning goal with only 1.2 seconds left in the middle frame to put the visitors up 2-1. Dante Hannoun scored Victoria’s lone marker on the powerplay in the second stanza. Spokane’s Hudson Elynuik opened the scoring earlier in the second period and added an empty net goal late in the game to seal the win.

The Royals generated many chances, hitting three posts and a crossbar, but the Chiefs’ netminder Tyson Verhelst made 33 saves on 34 shots for the win. Victoria’s Coleman Vollrath stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced.

Victoria went 1/5=20.0% on the powerplay, whereas Spokane was 0/3=0.0%.

The Royals will conclude their six-game homestand tomorrow night against the Chiefs with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Victoria will then head on the road for the first time this season for two games, playing the Kelowna Rockets on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
