Recap: VIC 3 - SPOK 5

The Victoria Royals (4-2) fell 5-3 in Spokane against the Chiefs (3-1) Friday night.

Defenseman Brenden Kichton scored 5 points (2g, 3a), while forward Mitch Holmberg provided a pair as both were named stars 1 and 2.

Unfortunately we couldn’t get it done on the power play and I think that was probably the difference tonight.”  Enio Sacilotto, assistant coach.

The Chiefs power play struck 3 times on 6 chances, as the Royals went 1 for 6.  Spokane out shot Victoria 31-27 on the night.  Eric Williams was named third star with a 24 save performance, while Patrick Polivka suffered his first defeat in five starts.

Sacilotto felt his club came out well in third, trailing by two.  “The guys put out a really strong effort in the third period, we wanted to get the early like we had planned, we had some great scoring opportunites.

After exchanging power play goals in the first, Spokane scored a pair in the second to take a 3-1 lead to the third.

Victoria responded 21 seconds into the final frame, courtesy of Austin Carroll to bring the Royals to within one.  After Kichton struck on the power play, Brandon Magee tipped an Alex Goglev pass past Eric Williams to again bring Victoria to within one. After a frantic final minute, Mike Aviani scored an empty net insurance marker with 3 seconds left to seal the victory.

The Royals will now have to wait until Feb 10th for a chance at their first win against the Chiefs.

Jamie Crooks (1g, 1a) rounded out the scoring for the Royals.  Sophmore forward Luke Harrison showed well in his first fight, against Reid Gow.  Magee and Crooks both have goals in back to back games.

Victoria plays the second of three in three nights in Tri City (3-3) Saturday night, before a 4pm tilt in Vancouver (2-4) Sunday.

We have a little bit of momentum we built in the third that we have to bring into tomorrow night, we have put tonight in the books and just get ready for Tri City.
