Recap: VIC 4 - BRN 3 OTW

Alex Gogolev scored the overtime winner to cap off a 3 point night as the Victoria Royals (9-4) came from behind to defeat the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings (6-6-1-0) 4-3 Tuesday night.

Ben Walker also had a pair of goals as the Royals improve to 6-2 at home and wrap up a four game homestand riding a 3 game win streak.

6 of their 9 wins have been come from behind victories as they rallied from a 2-0 second period deficit.


Netminder Jared Rathjen earned his 2nd victory in 3 starts with a 29 save performance, while Corbin Boes allowed 4 goals on 32 Royals shots.

Victoria’s power play struck 3 times on 9 chances, while Brandon went 1 for 6.

Alessio Bertaggia opened the scoring on a penalty shot in the second, before Eric Roy scored with the man advantage to give the visitors a 2-0 lead mid way throught the middle frame.

Ben Walker cut the lead in half on the power play before the period was out. 

In the third the Royals hit the iron twice within a minute before Alex Gogolev went in alone on a delayed penalty to tie the game at 2.  Walker would give the Royals their first lead of the game with the man advantage, but a centering feed by Tim McGauley would go off Keegan Kanzig’s skate and past Rathjen to pull Brandon into a 3-3 tie.

In overtime the Royals would test Boes three times on the power play before Gogolev fired a rebound past the Wheat Kings keeper for his second of the night and the victory infront of 4,663 fans.

Austin Carroll chipped in with 2 assists, Ben Walker 2 goals, and Alex Gogolev had 2 goals and an assist.  It’s back to back 2 goal games for Gogolev.  For Brandon, Bertaggia had a goal and an assist.

The clubs home record improves to 6-2.

Victoria now plays 7 consecutive on the road beginning Friday in Vancouver.
