Petan and Royals defenseman Joe Hicketts were named to Team Canada’s World Junior Selection camp Monday. Hicketts is the first Royals to attend. Chase DeLeo of the Winterhawks was named to the preliminary roster for Team USA.
Royals bench boss Dave Lowry will be assistant coach of Team Canada. The camp runs December 11 – 15th in Ontario, while the tournament goes Dec. 26th – Jan 5th.
Victoria fell in Portland 4-2 last Tuesday, as the Winterhawks evened the season series at a game a piece. The Royals won 6-2 on home ice on October 6th.
Portland is riding a 5 game win streak after a 3-2 victory at Tri City Saturday giving them 31 points, tied for 2nd in the US Division. After only 1 win in their first 10 games, they’ve won 13 of their last 19.
Victoria with 32 points and 2nd in the BC Division are coming off a 5-3 win in Kamloops on Saturday, snapping a 2 game slide.
The Royals will have 20 year old forward Brandon Magee back in the line up after serving a 5 game suspension. Magee has 24 points in 13 games.
It’s a battle between two clubs with efficient power plays, Portland is 5th, while Victoria is 3rd. They’ve scored the 8th and 9th most goals for per game on average respectively. The Winterhawks average the 5th most penalty minutes per game, while the Royals are 2nd.
Victoria’s Axel Blomqvist and Portland’s Anton Cederholm are both from Sweden and know each other well. Blomqvist, Petan and DeLeo are all Winnipeg Jets prospects.
Petan who played at last years WJ, is cousins with the Royals Dante Hannoun.
Victoria is led in scoring by Joe Hickett’s 36 points, the most by a defenseman in the CHL. He leads the WHL in assists with 29 – 15 coming on the power play. He’s tied for 4th in overall league scoring.
Austin Carroll has scored the 2nd most goals in the WHL with 20, and leads the league in power play markers with 9. He’s tied for 7th in overall scoring with 35 points.
Defenseman Travis Brown is 1st in rearguards in goals with 10, and power play markers with 8.
Newcomer Greg Chase has a goal in each of his last 3 games.
Portland who had 9 players attend NHL camps at the beginning of the season are led in scoring by last year’s 109 point, and 50 goal man, Oliver Bjorkstrand. The signed Blue Jackets 3rd round pick has 34 points, including 18 goals in 24 games. He was named WHL Player of the Week on Monday.
Chase DeLeo has 33 points, while Nic Petan who was 2nd in overall scoring last season with 113 points is 3rd on the team with 29 points in 22 games.
Royals Tyler Soy and Taylor Crunk will both be celebrating milestones when they next step onto the ice. Soy will be playing in his 100th WHL game, while Crunk will be in his 200th. Soy has collected 49 points (21g-28a) in those 100 games all as a Royal. Crunk meanwhile has collected 35 points (16g-19a) in his WHL career all while wearing a Royals’ sweater.
After Portland, Victoria faces Saskatoon Friday, Prince Albert next Tuesday, and Vancouver for Teddy Bear Toss night, Friday December 12th
