BC- The Victoria
Royals scored the first four goals of the game to defeat the Portland
Winterhawks 4-1 in front of a boisterous crowd of 6,627 on Friday night to
begin the 2015-16 WHL Regular Season.
Tonight's contest marked the first time in Royals’
history that the team had begun the regular season on home ice.
Victoria’s Jack Walker opened the scoring with 1.3
seconds remaining in the opening frame off a feed from Alex Forsberg, who was
later named the game’s first star. Forsberg recorded three assists in the Royals’
win. Victoria’s Vladimir Bobylev scored the game winning goal 2:19 into the
middle frame. The Royals’ Dante Hannoun and Ryan Peckford would add insurance
markers later in the period. Peckford, who skated in his first WHL regular
season game, tallied his first career marker in the league. Portland’s lone
goal came from Carl Ericson in the final period.
Victoria started 20-year old goaltender Coleman
Vollrath in net who stopped 21 of the 22 shots that he faced in the win. The Winterhawks opted for Michael
Bullion in net who turned aside 25 of the 29 shots directed his way.
The Royals
went 1/7=14.3%. Portland was unable to score on the powerplay and went
0/6=0.0%.
Victoria
will continue their six-game homestand tomorrow night against the Winterhawks.
